Reading vs Burton Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) Championship fixture features two sides in the bottom-half of the table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading saw their recent good run of form come to an end as they went down to a 2-0 defeat to Ipswich at Portman Road. The visitors improved after going down by two goals in the first 27 minutes but could not get a way back into the game. Burton picked up a vital three points against a relegation rival as they defeated Bolton 1-0 at the Macron Stadium. Lloyd Dyer got the goal that gave them all three points and put them back on track after four straight defeats. The two meetings between these sides last season were won by the Royals who came out on top 4-2 at the Pirelli Stadium and 3-0 at the Madejski. All seven goals the Berkshire side scored against them were scored by different players.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that Reading have won just three of 11 at home this season I cannot bring myself to back them at such a short price. I could not though take them on with this Burton side who have won just twice on the road. Given both teams have scored around two-thirds of their goals in the second-half then taking the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring makes sense. I also think backing both teams to score in the second-half is also worth a small interest for these reasons.

Second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes

Both teams to score in the second-half

Reading saw over 1.5 goals in 8 out of their last 10 games played

Reading scored over 2.5 goals in 4 out of their last 5 games played against Burton Albion

Burton Albion saw over 1.5 goals in 7 out of their last 10 games played

Burton Albion saw over 1.5 goals in 5 out of their last 5 games played against Reading

Reading Preview

The Royals defeat last time out put to an end a five-match unbeaten run but they still have lost just two of their last nine and are in 14th place. They have a nice run of fixtures over the holiday period with three of four against bottom six sides though the other one is against Bristol City. At the Madejski Stadium, it is only one defeat in their last five which came against top-of-the-table Wolves. The last two games have gone over 2.5 goals though just three of their last nine in front of their own fans have done so. Around 71% of the goals Reading have scored this season have come in the second-half with 57% in the final 30 minutes. Mo Barrow is their leading goalscorer this campaign with six goals and three in the last three.

Reading Team News

Callum Harriott, John Swift, Tennai Watson (all hamstring), George Evans (thigh), Sam Smith, Stephen Quinn, Joe Mendes (all knee) and Gareth McCleary (groin) are doubts. Jordan Obita (cruciate) is out for the season.

Burton Albion Preview

After four straight defeats and six without a victory a defeat of Bolton was a welcome boost and moved them up to 22nd in the table. This is one of three upcoming fixtures over the holiday period against teams in the middle third with the other against Leeds. Away from the Pirelli Stadium, they have lost just one of their last four picking up maximum points at Millwall and Bolton and a draw against Brentford. Each of their last eight in the league on the road has gone under 2.5 goals. Five of the last seven goals scored in Burton games have come in the final ten minutes. 65% of the goals the Brewers have scored this season have come in the second-half with around 50% in the 15 minutes before and after the interval.

Burton Albion Team News

Matty Lund and Jaimee Mason will hope to have recovered from illness while Jamie Allen (personal reasons) could return. Liam Boyce (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.
