Reading vs Bristol City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading made it back-to-back losses with a 2-0 loss at Swansea at the weekend undone by an Ollie McBurnie brace. They can have few complaints about the result as the Welsh side dominated proceedings.

Bristol City saw their two-game winning run come to an end as they suffered a 1-0 home loss to Stoke. A 33rd minute Darren Fletcher goal proved the difference with the result harsh on the Robins who were the clear better team.

The two meetings between these sides last season saw City do the double with a 2-0 victory at home and a 1-0 success at the Madejski. It put to an end a run that had seen the Royals win seven straight head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bristol City are the favourites to win here and this is probably more a reflection on how poorly Reading are playing than how well City are doing. The Robins are the most likely winners but I would look elsewhere for the value.

Both teams feature highly in games being level going into the break with a combined 17 from 30 and this looks an angle to attack. In addition, both have scored around two-thirds of their goals in the second-half so take this to be the highest scoring 45 minutes.

Reading Preview

The Royals have won just one of their last six and taken just 12 points for the season to sit in 22nd place. Paul Clement is under pressure and with his next three against teams outside the top ten this could be a crucial spell.

At the Madejski, they have won two of their last three matches though did lose the four prior to that. Sam Baldock and Yakou Meite both have two goals in their last three home appearances.

Reading have a respectable 19 goals for the season with their attack being led by Jon Dadhi Bodvarsson who has seven. Their defence has struggled and only two sides have shipped more than the 25 they have let in.

Reading Team News

Vita Mannone (unknown), Saeid Ezatolahi (knock), Paul McShane (hamstring), Adrian Popa (ankle), Dave Edwards (medial collateral ligament) and David Meyler (knee) are all doubts while Jordan Obita (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.

Bristol City Preview

The Robins have won just two of their last eight though they have won two of their last three. They sit 11th in the Championship table and just one of their next five is against a top-half side.

Away from Ashton Gate, they have lost on just two occasions this season though they have won just one of their last four. Their last three on the road have been low-scoring with a combined two goals netted.

Bristol City have netted just 18 times this campaign which for a side among the goals last season is a little disappointing. Their defence has been good though and they have the fifth best defensive record conceding just 15 goals.

Bristol City Team News

The Robins have keeper issues with Frank Fielding (meningitis) and Niki Maenpaa (abductor strain) both out for a few weeks. Nathan Baker (head) is being monitored while Bailey Wright (quad), Mo Eisa and Hakeeb Adelakun (both ankle) are closing in on returns.  Eros Pisano (hip) is a few weeks from a return while Korey Smith (knee) is out until January.
