Reading vs Barnsley Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) game features two sides in the bottom third looking to win their game in hand to climb the table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading drew their second successive game as they were held to a goalless draw at home by Sheffield Wednesday last time out. The Royals can consider themselves a little unlucky as they created more big chances but could not convert. Barnsley suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Leeds in a Yorkshire derby on Saturday afternoon. The game was beyond them early as they found themselves one down after 23 minutes and then two behind just before half-time and that was where the scoring ended. The two meetings between the pair last season saw the Royals take four points as the won 2-1 at Oakwell with the game at the Madejski ending 0-0. Garath McCleary had a mixed afternoon in that victory as he scored and then found himself dismissed.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that Reading have won just one of their last seven at home and Barnsley are unbeaten in their last four on the road (which includes games with Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday) then the prices on offer make no sense and the Tykes need to be backed along with the draw in the double chance market. I also think the visitors look worth a small interest to be ahead in this game going into the interval considering the Royals have a woeful first-half record and have been behind in two of their last three and four of their last seven at the interval.

Reading Preview

The Royals are in decent form with two victories, two draws and just one defeat from their last five fixtures. This is a good run of games with six of their next nine against teams currently in the bottom third. At the Madejski Stadium, they have struggled of late with just one win in their last seven though six of these seven visitors are in the top 14. It is three goals in their last four in front of their own fans but these came in one game so that makes it three without scoring at their own ground. Six of the last ten Reading matches have gone over 2.5 goals and three of the last five have gone over 3.5. Seven of the last ten the Berkshire side have netted have come in the second-half with five of these in the final 15 minutes.

Reading Team News

Callum Harriott, John Swift, Tennai Watson (all hamstring), George Evans (thigh), Sam Smith, Stephen Quinn, Joe Mendes (all knee) and Gareth McCleary (groin) are doubts. Jordan Obita (cruciate) is out for the season.

Barnsley Preview

After eight points from four games it is now two straight defeats for the Tykes who are still in the bottom third of the table. Three of their next four are against sides in the bottom ten and the next two against sides beneath them. Away from Oakwell, they are playing well with two victories and two draws from their last four which included games with Sheff Wed and Norwich. Each of their last six league games on the road have seen both teams find the back of the net. None of their last four have and just one of their last seven have gone over 2.5 goals. Six of the last seven goals that they have conceded have come in the first-half with four of these coming in the ten minutes just before the break.

Barnsley Team News

Lloyd Isgrove (thigh), Mamadou Thiam (knock) and Adam Jackson (knee) are doubts
