Reading vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading looked to be on course for a massive three points on Tuesday night but a 92nd minute Jack Hobbs goal meant their trip to Bolton ended 1-1. A Nelson Oliveira penalty 16 minutes from time had put them in line for victory.

Aston Villa got back to winning ways last weekend as they defeated bottom side Ipswich 2-1 at Villa Park. A Tammy Abraham brace (including a penalty) seemed to have put them on track but they conceded 14 minutes from time and then survived a nervy few minutes.

The reverse fixture came on August 25th and it ended 1-1 with Ahmed El Mohamady netting for the Midlands outfit and Sam Baldock converting a late penalty for the Royals. It continued a head-to-head trend that has seen both teams net in five of their last six meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Aston Villa are strong favourites to win this one but a narrow 2-1 win over Ipswich and a poor 3-0 road loss at Wigan suggests all is still not right with the Midlands side.  Reading did beat Forest here last time so are tricky opponents and as such I would look elsewhere to find the value.

I like the look of two players in the goalscorer markets to net at any time.  For the hosts I like Nelson Oliveira who netted in midweek with a penalty and the man on loan from Norwich knows where the back of the net is at this level. For the visitors Tammy Abraham is the obvious choice but at the prices I prefer a play on Conor Hourihane who is given licence to get forward to support Abraham.

Reading Preview

The Royals have won just one of their last 13 but five points from their last five and the poor form of Rotherham has seen them inch to safety. They sit 22nd and that is just one place and one point behind the Millers.

At the Madejski, the Berkshire outfit were five without a victory before beating Forest 2-0 last time in front of their own fans. Just one of their last four at their own place has seen both teams net.

Reading have seen just two of their last eight and three of their last 11 in the league go over 2.5 goals. Over 60% of their goals in the Championship this season have come in the second-half.

Reading Team News

John O’Shea and Yakou Meite (both unknown) are doubts while Tom McIntyre (eye). Paul McShane (knee), Adrian Popa (ankle), Jordan Obita (cruciate) and Saeid Ezzatolahi (thigh) are all long-term absentees.  Leandro Bacuna meanwhile completed a move to Cardiff.

Aston Villa Preview

It is just one win in five for Aston Villa and two in their last nine through they maintain touching distance to the top six. They are just four places and the same number of points from Derby in sixth.

Away from Villa Park, the Midlands side were unbeaten in five before an awful showing on their last road trip going down 3-0 at Wigan. Four of their last six on their travels have seen exactly two or three goals scored.

Each of the last four and 13 of the last 16 that Aston Villa have played in the Championship have gone over 2.5 goals. Around 58% of their league goals this season have come after the interval.

Aston Villa Team News

Jack Grealish (shin) and Henri Lansbury (hamstring) are doubts while Axel Tuanzebe (foot) and Orjan Nyland (Achilles) are long-term absentees. Tyrone Mings and Frederic Guilbert will be added to the squad after deadline day moves.
