Queens Park Rangers vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

QPR put their two-game losing run behind them on Tuesday night as they battled out a 1-1 draw at home to Derby. The Rs needed an 87th minute Massimo Luongo goal to claim a point that was the least their performance deserved. Sunderland were comfortably beaten 3-0 at home to Aston Villa in midweek as the gulf in class between the sides showed. The Black Cats were undone by two headed goals as they struggled to deal with the aerial threat of Villa. The reverse fixture came in mid-October from the Stadium of Light and it ended in a 1-1 draw meaning the London side have lost just one of their last five meetings with the Wearsiders. The goalscorers on that occasion were Idrissa Sylla for the visitors and Aiden McGeady for the hosts.

Betting Tips and Predictions

QPR will be a popular bet this weekend given how poor Sunderland are and while they should win the game they are not the kind of side I want to trust when short-priced favourites so I will look elsewhere for my bets. In midweek, I suggested that Sunderland were a mess at set-pieces and that John Terry looked a goal goalscorer bet, the principle was right with the Black Cats conceding two goals from crosses but sadly Terry did not net. I think the tactic should be similar this week so side with Matt Smith who was unlucky not to score in midweek and who was the target for numerous crosses against Derby. Take him to net at any time and try a small play on him to score two or more.

Queens Park Rangers Preview

The Rs have won just one of their last five and two of their last eight which means they are still not out of the relegation picture. They are nine points clear of Birmingham in 22nd with a game in hand so another win or two should be enough. At Loftus Road, it has been a mixed set of results recently with three victories, three draws and three defeats from their last nine. Their 18 home matches this season has produced a total of 50 goals which is an average of just under three per fixture. The last three QPR league matches and four of their last five have seen both teams find the back of the net. Around 67% of the goals the London side have scored have come in the second-half with 36% in the final 15 minutes.

Queens Park Rangers Team News

Idrissa Sylla (calf) and Grant Hall (knee) are doubts while Jamie Mackie (back surgery) and David Wheeler (ankle) are long-term absentees.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats have now taken just three points from their last eight a run that has pushed them to the bottom of the table. Just two of their next five are against teams in the top-half so they need to use this run to get some points on board. Away from the Stadium of Light, they are without a victory in five though they have drawn two of their last three. Bryan Oviedo has netted in two of his last four appearances on the road. Sunderland have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight and in seven of their last nine have shipped two or more goals. Around 63% of the goals they have scored this season have come in the first-half.

Sunderland Team News

Jake Clarke-Salter while miss the game through suspension. Tyias Browning (unknown), Marc Wilson, Darron Gibson, Patrick McNair (all groin) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts while Duncan Watmore (knee) and Robbin Ruitter (broken finger) are out for the season.
