Queens Park Rangers vs Cardiff City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (15:00) features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. QPR suffered a 1-0 loss to local rivals Millwall at the Den last time out going behind in the 55th minute and finding no way back. It was a tight game but the Lions probably just about deserved the three points. Cardiff suffered a third straight defeat going down 1-0 at home to Preston in their last fixture. The Bluebirds can have few complaints in a game they were second best and the alarm bells are starting to sound for the Welsh side. The reverse fixture came at the end of August in a game that Cardiff won 2-1 at their own ground. Matt Smith give the visitors the lead but then Junior Hoilett and Sol Bamba netted to secure three points.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is one of those strange games where you could make a case for both teams at the odds on offer. QPR have already beaten Sheffield United and Wolves at their own ground so perhaps they appeal to beat an out of sorts Cardiff. Or maybe the visitors can bounce back against a side with just one victory in ten. In this situation, then perhaps the draw makes the most sense. It would put to an end a losing run for the visitors and the hosts have drawn nine this season and always raise their game for the bigger sides. Neither side are blessed with prolific goalscorers so I think a goal from a set-piece could be the way forward and Sol Bamba for the Welsh outfit looks a value each-way choice in this match.

Queens Park Rangers Preview

The Rs have had a mixed set of results lately with one victory, one defeat and two draws from their last four. A long term run of just one victory in their last ten means they are in 18th place and just five points above the relegation zone. At Loftus Road, it is now two defeats and two draws from their last four and just two victories from their last nine. Each of their last four in the league and ten of 12 in all competitions has been teams score in their home matches. A struggle this season for QPR has been goals with the joint-fifth lowest scoring record in the division and no player having scored than five goals. Matt Smith is that player with five goals though he has not netted in his last six and has just one in his last 11 appearances.

Queens Park Rangers Team News

James Perch (dislocated kneecap) and Joel Lynch (ankle) are doubts. Josh Scowen will return following his suspension.

Cardiff City Preview

A run of three straight defeats for the Bluebirds means they have dropped out of the automatic promotion spots and now sit in fourth. They are still just one behind Derby and have a six-point cushion in the play-offs but their flat performances are a worry currently. Away from the Cardiff City Stadium, it has been a mixed bag lately with two victories, two defeats and a draw. The 13 road goals they have conceded is joint-second best in the division but their attack has netted just 13 on their travels which is a bottom-half road record. Just one of their last four and three of their last nine have seen both teams find the back of the net. 65% of the goals Cardiff have scored this season have come in the second-half with 43% in the last 30 minutes.

Cardiff City Team News

Sean Morrison (unknown), Kadeem Harris (ankle), Aron Gunnarsson (ankle), Danny Ward (unknown) and Lee Camp (groin) are doubts while Jazz Richards (ankle) is a long-term absentee
