PSV Eindhoven vs AZ Alkmaar Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar will square off at the Philips Stadion on Saturday afternoon, with both teams looking to kick off their new Eredivisie campaign on a positive note. PSV Eindhoven only managed a nil-nil draw against Augsburg in a friendly fixture at the weekend, while AZ Alkmaar beat Udinese 1-2 thanks to goals from Marko Vejinovic and Joris van Overeem. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although PSV looked terrible in their Europa League qualifying tie, they hold a strong head-to-head record over AZ Alkmaar. Furthermore, PSV are a strong side at home as they were on a 14-game unbeaten streak across all competitions prior to their loss at the hands of Osijek last week. I’m backing PSV Eindhoven to win here, but I’m also expecting AZ Alkmaar to get on the scoresheet as they have been scoring goals for fun recently.

PSV Eindhoven Preview

PSV Eindhoven had a disappointing Eredivisie campaign last term as they finished third in the standings, five points behind runner-ups Ajax and six points behind the current leaders Feyenoord. They looked pretty solid in the first part of their pre-season campaign, beating the likes of Waalwijk and Sion and drawing against Ligue 1 defending champions Monaco. However, they were beaten 3-1 by Grasshoppers in their 4th friendly fixture and only drew nil-nil against Augsburg a few days ago. Sandwiched in-between these friendly games, PSG suffered a humiliating elimination from the Europa League qualifying as they were beaten 1-0  home and away by the Croatian side Osijek. This means that without European football for the rest of the season, PSV should be able to focus on their Eredivisie campaign more than they did last season. PSV have sold eight players during the transfer window for a total fee of €26.2 million, with the biggest names being Davy Propper, Hector Moreno, Jetro Willems and Andres Guardado. In terms of arrivals, PSV brought in Hirving Lozano from CF Pachuca for €8m and Derrick Luckassen from their Saturday’s opponents Derrick Luckassen €5m. Prior to their 0-1 home loss at the hands of Osijek, PSV Eindhoven were on a 14-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, winning twelve in the process. In addition, PSV Eindhoven are undefeated in their last ten home meetings with AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie, scoring at least two goals in six of these.

PSV Eindhoven Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for manager Phillip Cocu ahead of this game and the good news is that Nikolai Laursen is back in training following his long-term injury.

AZ Alkmaar Preview

Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar had a near impeccable pre-season campaign as they have won seven of their eight friendlies. AZ head into this tie on the back of a three-game winning streak, including a 1-2 victory over the Serie A side Udinese in their most recent friendly game. AZ finished 6th in the Eredivisie table last term and were unlucky to not play in Europe this year as they have lost 0-2 at the hands of Vitesse in the KNVB Beker Cup final towards the end of the previous campaign and then they lost at penalties their Eredivisie Europa League play-offs final against FC Utrecht. They looked very good in pre-season despite the fact that they have been very quiet throughout this transfer window. AZ have sold two of their defenders to their rivals this summer, as Ridgeciano Haps joined Feyenoord for €6m while Derrick Luckassen moved to PSV Eindhoven for €5m. In terms of arrivals, AZ only brought in goalkeeper Marco Bizot from the Belgian side Genk for a free transfer and Marko Vejinovic on loan from Feyenoord. The good news is that AZ managed to keep their last season’s best two players at the club so far this summer, as both Wout Weghorst and Alireza Jahanbakhsh enjoyed a prolific campaign last season. Wout Weghorst was AZ’s top scorer with 17 goals under his belt, while helped the team with ten goals and eight assists. The bad news is that AZ have lost their last seven meetings with PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, conceding at least two goals in each of these. Furthermore, they are winless in ten visits to the Philips Stadion since a 2-3 triumph back in February 2007.

AZ Alkmaar Team News

Myron Boadu is back in training but he still need more time to get fit.
