Preston North End vs West Bromwich Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides at opposite ends of the Championship table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Preston lost their third straight league game despite a goal each from Callum Robinson and Daniel Johnson they went down 3-2 to Sheffield United.  In midweek, they were in League Cup action as they hosted Middlesbrough and it ended 2-2 in regular time with the Teesiders going through on penalties.

West Brom stretched their unbeaten run to four with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Millwall with a goal each from Dwight Gayle and Kieran Gibbs.  They were also in League Cup action in midweek and hosted Crystal Palace and they lost 3-0.

These two sides were in different divisions last season so you have to go back to 2009/10 for their last meeting.  It is therefore hard to read much into their head-to-head record but for what it is worth the side hosting has won 14 of their last 16 battles.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I was pleasantly surprised to see the price on offer about West Brom to win here and think they look a great bet.  Preston while losing just one of four at Deepdale this season have not met a team of the calibre of the Baggies. West Brom meanwhile have had some tough road games and should have far too much firepower here.

Given the visitors are the highest scoring team this season and they are up against the weakest defence backing total West Brom goals appeals.  Over 1.5 looks good value though I prefer an even more speculative over 2.5 bet.

Preston North End Preview

The Lilywhites have not won a game since the opening day of the season picking up just two points from their last eight.  They are bottom of the table on goal-difference and three of their next five come against sides in the top eight.

At Deepdale, it has been a mixed bag with a victory over QPR, draws with Bolton and Stoke and a defeat to Reading.  Each of their last three in front of their own fans has seen both teams score and gone over 3.5 goals.

Preston have struggled for goals this season netting just nine times with only Callum Robinson getting more than two goals.  At the back have been their major issues with no side shipping more than the 18 they have let in at an average of two per fixture.

Preston North End Team News

Michael Crowe (unknown) is a doubt while Sean Maguire , Calum Woods (both hamstring) and Billy Bodin (cruciate) are long-term absentees.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

The Baggies have taken ten points from their last four fixtures and their one defeat in the last eight came away at Middlesbrough.  They sit in third place and now face three straight against opponents out of the top ten.

Away from the Hawthorns, it has been a mixed bag with a victory at Norwich, draws at Nottingham Forest and Birmingham and a defeat at Boro.  Three of these four have seen both teams net with the only team they failed to bag was on their trip to Teeside where nobody has scored in the league this season.

West Brom are the great entertainers of the division netting a league high 22 goals with Jay Rodriguez (six) and Dwight Gayle (five) leading the line.  Their defence is a little shaky and they have conceded 12 times keeping just one clean sheet this campaign.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

James Morrison (unknown) is a doubt while Bakary Sako might have to wait to be added to the matchday squad after joining as a free-agent.
