Preston North End vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) game features Simon Grayson returning to his old side Preston who he left in the summer. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Preston continued their recent good form with a 2-1 victory at Hull in midweek. Tom Barkhuizen gave them the lead but Hull levelled after 50 minutes and the game seemed headed for a draw until up stepped Callum Robinson in the 88th minute to claim all three points for the visitors. Sunderland continued their miserable slump with a 5-2 defeat at Ipswich in midweek. The Black Cats could not get any breaks in the game and only had a goal each from Billy Jones and Aiden McGeady to show for their efforts. The last time these two met at Deepdale came in the FA Cup in 2007 and the Lillywhites won that 1-0 but this was over a decade ago so it has hard to read much of relevance to head-to-head stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that Sunderland are a mess Preston will be a popular bet this weekend and I could not put anyone off them at the prices but I am a little bit wary of getting involved at lower than evens given they lack a reliable scorer. In addition, if anybody knows the weakness in that Preston side it is former boss Simon Grayson. Preston games tend to be low-scoring but you must think Alex Neil will have his side open here against a Black Cats outfit that are leaking goals. I like the play of over 2.5 goals and given the statistics on both teams the second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes in this fixture.

Preston North End Preview

The Lillywhites are another side who are proving the summer critics wrong as they sit in fifth place with 19 points. They are on a good run of form with no defeat in seven winning three of their last four. At home, they have taken 11 points from a possible 15 with three victories and two draws. These games at Deepdale have produced a total of just seven goals for both sides and three of these came in one match against Cardiff. Tom Barkhuizen has netted in two of his last three appearances and is one of four Preston players on two goals with nobody scoring more than two. Around 64% of their goals this season have come in the second-half with 55% in the last 30 minutes.

Preston North End Team News

Gregory Cunningham (knee) is listed as day-to-day.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats are in a mess with six defeats in their last seven and no victory in eight in the league. They have taken just six points from their opening ten fixtures and pressure is growing on current boss Simon Grayson. On the road, they won their opening trip to Norwich but since then have taken just two draws from their previous four. Four of their last five on their travels have seen both teams find the back of the net. The North-Eastern side have shipped 16 goals in their last eight matches which is an average of two per fixture. 40% of their goals in the Championship this season have come in the final 30 minutes.

Sunderland Team News

Josh Maja (knee) and Patrick McNair (cruciate) are closing in on returns while Lewis Grabban (hamstring) and Jonny Williams (illness) are unlikely to feature.
