Preston North End vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday early evening (17:30) game is live on SKYTV and features two of the promotion hopefuls. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Preston booked their place in the Second Round of the League Cup on Tuesday night with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Morecambe. In the league, they suffered their first defeat of the season going down 1-0 at Swansea. Stoke have had a week off with no League Cup fixture and will be looking to build on their 1-1 draw with Brentford last time out. Benik Afobe netted for the second successive game to secure their first point of the season. The last time these two sides met came way back in 2008 so it is hard to read too much into their head-to-head record. For what it is worth the home side has won each of the last three meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I could not put anyone off Preston at these odds though I am a little unsure what to make of the visitors just yet. Stoke have had two tough opening games and as such, I would like to wait and see them a few more times before making a judgement. These two sides have combined for four goals between them this season and while the under 2.5 goals is too short under 1.5 might still be an option. On a similar line oppose the time of the first goal which is put at 32:00,

Preston North End Preview

The Lilywhites defeat last weekend to Swansea put to an end a six-game unbeaten run in the league. It was also the fourth of their last five that has seen one or both teams fail to find the back of the net. At Deepdale, they have won both this season and going back four of their last five competitive fixtures. Lewis Moult has now netted in two of his last three appearances in front of his own fans. The two league games that Preston have played this season have ended in the same 1-0 scoreline. In each of their last five the side that has netted the opening goal has gone on to win the tie.

Preston North End Team News

Billy Bodin (cruciate) and Sean Maguire (hamstring) are both absentees while Daniel Johnson is back in training.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters have taken one point from their two matches so far and if you go back into last season have now won just one of the previous 14. Both their ties this season and the final two of the last campaign have seen both teams score. Away from the Britannia Stadium, they have won just one of their last 16 which came on the final day of the season at Swansea. The Staffordshire side have netted just six times from their previous nine on the road. Benik Afobe has grabbed both the goals that Stoke have scored this season with one coming from the penalty spot. Tom Ince is averaging 2.5 shots per match and he looks the most likely to score outside of Afobe.

Stoke City Team News

Bruno Martins Indi (Achilles), Ibrahim Afellay and Sam Clucas (both knee) are set to miss out.
