Preston North End vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two teams in the top-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Preston continued their recent good run of results with a 2-1 victory at the Pirelli Stadium over Burton. Tom Clarke and Daryl Horgan netted second-half goals to secure all three points. Sheffield United continued their recent struggles as they suffered a 2-1 home loss to Bristol City at Bramall Lane in their last game. Leon Clarke looked to have given the ten-men Blades a point but a late goal saw the Robins fly off with all three. The last time these sides met came in the 2015 FA Cup in a game that ended 1-1 at Deepdale before North-End emerged victorious 3-1 in the replay. Paul Gallagher who still plays for the Lillywhites grabbed three goals in these two fixtures.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Preston are marginal favourites for this game against an out of form Sheffield United though the home side have beaten just two top ten teams this season so I would not rush to back them but the Blades poor form makes them hard to side with either. Ten of the 21 the hosts have played this season have been level at half-time and this looks worth a little interest in a difficult game to call. In addition, have a small interest on the second-half to be the highest scoring as just 32% of the goals North-End have scored have come in the first-half.

Preston North End Preview

The Lillywhites are in good form with three victories and two draws from their last five though just one of their opponents is a top-half team. This marks the start of a run of fixtures which sees four of their next five against top-half opponents. At Deepdale, they have struggled for victories recently winning just one of their last six in front of their own fans. The last three home fixtures have seen a total of just three goals scored in total with North-End grabbing just one of these. Preston have scored just once in the first-half in their last seven fixtures and just 32% of their goals this season have come in the opening 45 minutes. Ten of their 21 matches have been level going into the interval.

Preston North End Team News

Calum Woods (hamstring) is a doubt while Josh Earl, Tommy Spurr (both knee), Greg Cunningham and Sean Maguire (both hamstring) are long-term absentees.

Sheffield United Preview

It is now just one point from their last four games for the Blades who have slid down the table and now find themselves in sixth place. Three of their next five come against sides in the top ten though they also have two home fixtures which come against Sunderland and Burton. Away from Bramall Lane, it has been a mixed bag with three victories and three defeats from their last six. Five of the last six on their travels have seen both teams find the back of the net with the same number going over 2.5 goals. Sheffield United are the team to watch for neutrals with a total of 27 goals netted in total in the last six matches. 53% of the goals scored have come in the 15 minutes before half-time and the 15 minutes before full-time.

Sheffield United Team News

Paul Coutts is out for the season after breaking his leg while Ched Evans (ankle) and Kieron Freeman (dislocated kneecap) are doubts.  John Fleck will miss the game through suspension following his red card.
