Preston North End vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day (15:00) fixture features two sides just outside the top six in the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Preston continued their recent good form as they travelled to Wales and defeated Cardiff 1-0 last time out. That game was settled by a late Tom Clarke goal as North-End grabbed a deserved three points. Middlesbrough suffered a home loss to Aston Villa in the first game in charge for new boss Tony Pulis. The home side were the better team but were undone by a goal from Robert Snodgrass. The reverse fixture between these sides came at the end of August at the Riverside Stadium and it ended in a goalless draw. It means the North-Eastern side are without a defeat in their last three head-to-heads though two of these have ended in a draw.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to argue on the prices here which Preston slight favourites to win the game but considering they have won just five of 12 at home this season I would avoid a bet in the match markets. Bookmakers make under 2.5 goals a short price here but you can still get some value in going under 1.5 goals. This bet would have paid in three of the last four for the hosts while Boro will set up to be tight and tough to break down under the king of organized in Tony Pulis. Both sides have scored around two-thirds of their goals in the second-half so go against the game having an early goal which is timed at 32:00 minutes in what should be a tight, cagey affair.

Preston North End Preview

It is now nine games unbeaten for the Lillywhites with five victories and four draws a run that has seen them just outside the play-off places. After losing Simon Grayson in the summer it was a worry if Alex Neil was the right man but so far, he is doing a good job to have them just one point and two places removed from the top six. At Deepdale, they are unbeaten in four winning two of these and drawing the other two and have lost just twice at home all season. Their last four in front of their own fans have been low scoring with a total of just four goals. Just one of the last four Preston have played and four of the last 11 have seen both teams score. 15 of the 25 in the league this season have gone under 2.5 goals while the Lancashire outfit average a 23rd ranked 2.04 goals per fixture.

Preston North End Team News

Paul Gallagher (calf) is a doubt while Darnell Fisher (unknown) Josh Earl, Tommy Spurr (both knee) are out for a few weeks. Sean Maguire (hamstring) is a long-term absentee.

Middlesbrough Preview

It is a mixed bag for Boro currently with five victories and five defeats from their last ten matches. They sit in ninth place just three points behind sixth but ten behind Derby in tenth and automatic promotion looks a difficult challenge. Away from the Riverside Stadium, they won their last game at Sheffield Wednesday but before that had lost three straight. Both teams to score is a feature of their road games with it happening in their last five and eight of their last nine in all competitions. The 24 goals that they have conceded means that Middlesbrough have the joint-fifth best ranked defence in the division. Their struggles come at the end with 32 goals netted which is just the 13th best in the division and 12 of these have been netted by just one player in Britt Assombalonga.

Boro have no registered injuries or suspensions ahead of this game.
