Preston North End vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Preston picked up a point at the Den last time out in a game that ended 1-1. Millwall had taken a first-half lead but North-End fought back to claim a deserved share of the spoils thanks to a Callum Robinson strike.

Birmingham saw their winning run come to an end as they lost 3-0 at home to high-flying Derby. The scoreline flattered the Rams but the Blues were once again undone by failings in front of goal.

The reverse fixture came in mid-September and saw the Lancashire side pick up a 3-1 road success. Maxime Collin had given the Midlands outfit the lead but a goal each from Daniel Johnson, Jordan Hugill and Tom Barkhuizen secured the Lillywhites the points.

Betting Tips and Predictions

With just five draws from their 13 home fixtures this season it is hard to bring myself to recommend Preston at such short odds. I cannot though make a case for Birmingham with just one road victory for the entire season and as such I would recommend looking away from the win/draw/win market for the bets.

14 of the 27 the Lillywhites have played this season have been level at half-time and so this looks a way to get into the game by taking the game to be goalless at half-time and backing the second-half to be the highest scoring.

Preston North End Preview

A tendency to draw a few too many is costing the Lillywhites with three of their last five ending all-square. They are in tenth just two behind the play-off spots with none of their next four against teams above them.

At Deepdale, they are tough to beat with two victories, two draws and a narrow loss to Boro from their last five. Jordan Hugill has found the back of the net three times in the last four in front of his own fans.

The 27 goals they have conceded this season gives Preston the joint-fifth best defensive record in the division. 14 of the 27 league fixtures this season have been level going in to the break.

Preston North End Team News

Sean Maguire (hamstring), Tommy Spurr and Josh Earl (both knee) are long-term absentees while Eoin Doyle (illness) and Darnell Fisher (hip) are doubts.

Birmingham City Preview

A run of two straight league victories and three in all competitions came to an end for the Blues last time out. They sit in 23rd though have just two of their next eight (including this one) are against top ten teams.

Away from St Andrew’s, they have won just once this season though that did come last time on the road against Reading. They have picked up useful road points in recent times against Sheffield United and Sunderland with a narrow defeat at Fulham.

Each of the last four and six of the last eight have seen both teams fail to find the back of the net. Just 13% of the goals Birmingham have netted have come in the opening 15 minutes of either half.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (dislocated shoulder) and Tomas Kuszczak (groin) are closing in on returns while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
