Preston North End vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Wednesday fixture (19:45) features two sides in the top ten of the Championship league table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Preston suffered a second consecutive defeat as they went down 3-2 at home to Brentford at the weekend. Goals from Sean Maguire and Tom Barkhuizen twice brought them back from behind but they could not hold off the Bees who netted a third and winning goal. Aston Villa battled out a 0-0 draw in their local derby with Birmingham last weekend. It was a closely fought game though Villa probably created the best scoring opportunities. The Lillywhites took four points from the two meetings last season drawing 2-2 at Villa Park and winning 2-0 at Deepdale. Jordan Hugill got three goals in those two fixtures while Albert Adomah netted twice.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I like the look of Aston Villa here with the safety of the draw no bet market. Preston have started to stutter in recent weeks going down to defeat to Brentford and Wolves while drawing with Fulham and Sunderland. Villa have won five of their last seven and the two they did not were away to Wolves (not an easy task) and away to Birmingham (in a game they hit the woodwork twice in). I like the look of John Terry in the first goalscorer market after he went close with a couple of efforts in the last game. The Villa defender has netted just once this season but with several good set-piece takers in the mix it is only a matter of time before he starts scoring with a little more regularity.

Preston North End Preview

After a strong start to the season North-End have started to stutter a little with back-to-back defeats and no victory in their last four. Four of their next five fixtures are against teams in the current top ten. At Deepdale, they have lost just once this season but have won just one of their last five. Three of their last five in front of their own fans have seen both teams score while four of these have gone over 2.5 goals. Only Millwall have seen more of their games go under 1.5 goals than the six Preston have been involved in. Around 64% of their goals have come in the second-half and none of their strikes have been in the opening 15 minutes.

Preston North End Team News

Alan Browne will return from suspension while Declan Rudd, Tommy Spurr, Tom Clarke and Greg Cunningham remain sidelined.

Aston Villa Preview

It is now just one defeat from their last 11 league games for Villa with victory in five of their last seven. This marks the start of a five-game run for the Midlands outfit where they do not face any of the top eight. Away from Villa Park, they have lost just one of their last five though they have a record of two defeats and one draw when facing top ten teams. After seven in their previous two road trips they have failed to score in their last two. Only three sides have a better defensive record than the 13 they have conceded while the 19 they have scored has them in top-half for attacking teams. Around 58% of the goals they have scored have come in the first-half and 37% in the opening 30 minutes.

Aston Villa Team News

Neil Taylor will return from suspension while Henri Lansbury (knee), Jack Grealish (stomach), Jonathan Kodjia (ankle), Andre Green (hamstring), Gabby Agbonlahor (calf) and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (thigh) are all doubts.
