Portugal vs Mexico Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Portugal and Mexico will square off at the Otkrytiye Arena on Sunday at lunchtime in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, with both sides looking to earn the third spot. Portugal suffered a disappointing penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Chile in the Semi-finals, with Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho, and Nani all missing their kicks from the spot. Meanwhile, Mexico were thrashed 4-1 by Germany in the other Semi-final game, with their consolation goal being scored by Marco Fabian with just one minute to go. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m expecting chances at both ends of the field as these two sides have nothing to lose. Both sides have scored plenty of goals throughout the group stage and I think this will be the case in here as well.

Portugal Preview

Portugal had a decent group stage campaign at the tournament as they drew 2-2 with Mexico in the opening round and followed this up with back-to-back wins over Russia and New Zealand without conceding a single goal. The Portuguese looked very well-organized at the back throughout this tournament as they kept three clean sheets in their four fixtures so far, including their nil-nil draw against Chile in the semi-finals. Actually, Portugal have only conceded five goals in their last ten games across all competitions. Third placed play-off fixtures are always a good opportunity for the coach to give unused players a chance to play so this should be the case here for Portugal as well. Portugal will be without their star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, as he has been give the leave of absence for this clash in order to go back home to visit his newborn twins. However, Portugal still have plenty of talent in their ranks and will be a great opportunity for Guerreiro, Pereira or Semedo to enjoy some play time. Head-to-head, Portugal are undefeated in their three meetings with Mexico across all competitions, scoring two goals in two of these.

Portugal Team News

Portugal will be without Cristiano Ronaldo and I’m also expecting them to field a different team with some youth players.

Mexico Preview

On the contrary, Mexico were on a seven-game unbeaten streak across all competitions prior to their humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Germany in the Semi-finals. The Mexicans conceded two goals in the first ten minutes of the game and failed to come back into the game afterward. Actually, Mexico have allowed at least one goal in each of their four games at this tournament and have conceded the opening goal in each of their clashes as well. The good news is that Mexico have been scoring goals for fun throughout this tournament, as they managed to find the back of the net at least twice in three of their four games. The interesting fact is that all of their seven goals have been scored by different players. I think that Mexico will be looking to win this clash as a morale boost ahead of their Gold Cup campaign. The Mexicans have also enjoyed a strong qualifying campaign for the World Cup 2018 as they find themselves on top of their group table with 14 points after six rounds thanks to a record of four wins and two draws. Furthermore, Mexico have been a strong side on the road over the past two years, winning just two of their last 16 games.

Mexico Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Mexico ahead of this game. I’m expecting them to play with Vela and Reyes upfront, while Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos will sustain them from midfield.
