Portugal vs Hungary Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Portugal will look to close the gap at the top of the World Cup qualifying group B table when they welcome Hungary at the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica on Saturday night. Portugal managed a comfortable 4-1 home victory over Latvia last time out thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and two other goals from William Carvalho and Bruno Alves. Hungary lost 0-2 at home at the hands of Sweden, with Bern Storck’s men conceding a goal in each half. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Portugal are huge favourites to win here, but Hungary proved to be a tough nut to crack in their most recent two qualifiers. They have kept a clean sheet in each of their last two games of this WC qualifying campaign, and they also scored six goals in the process. I’m expecting an entertaining affair with goals at both ends of the field.

Portugal Preview

After winning Euro 2016 last summer, Portugal kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign in a disappointing manner. The Portuguese were beaten 2-0 on the road in Switzerland in the group opener, but they bounced back with three straight victories since then. They managed back-to-back wins over Andorra, Faroe Islands and Latvia, scoring 14 goals and conceding just once in the process. Portugal managed to score at least four goals in each of their last three qualifiers. Cristiano Ronaldo has been Portugal’s most dangerous player in front of goal throughout this qualification process, as he is the joint topscorer of this qualifying campaign with 7 goals under his belt. Andre Silva has also played a crucial role in Portugal’s performances throughout this qualifying campaign, helping the team with four goals in his four appearances. On home soil, Portugal are currently on a six-game winning streak across all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in four of these. In addition, Portugal have won their three home games against Hungary, scoring three goals in each of these. Head-to-head, Portugal are undefeated in their six meetings with Hungary across all competitions, winning five and drawing once in the process.

Hungary Preview

Hungary registered a disappointing nil-nil draw against Faroe Islands in the group opener and followed this up with a 2-3 home defeat at the hands of Switzerland in their second group match. However, the Hungarians looked much better recently, having picked up back-to-back wins over Latvia and Andorra, without conceding a single goal in the process. They currently sit in third spot in the group B table with 7 points under their belts after four rounds, just two points off their Saturday’s opponents. Adam Szalai has played a vital part in Hungary’s performances throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign, helping the team with four goals in his four group appearances. Adam Gyurcso has also managed to score two goals for Hungary in this qualification process. The bad news is that Hungary aren’t regarded as good travellers as they have only won four of their last 13 away games across all competitions. Hungary met Portugal in the group stage of the Euro 2016 and the game ended as an impressive 3-3 draw. However, the Hungarians have failed to win any of their six meetings with Portugal across all competitions, losing five in the process.
