Portugal vs Faroe Islands Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Portugal will be aiming to close the gap at the top of their World Cup qualifying group B table when they welcome Faroes Islands at the Estadio do Bessa Seculo XXI in Porto on Thursday night. Portugal managed a comfortable 0-3 win against Latvia last time out thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and another goal from Andre Silva. On the other hand, Faroes Islands lost 0-2 at home against Switzerland, with the minnows conceding a goal in each half. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Portugal should be able to grab another comfortable victory in this one as they smashed Faroes Islands in their previous two meetings, scoring eleven goals and conceding none in the process. Portugal have scored at least two goals in seven of their last nine home fixtures across all competitions, while Faroe Islands have failed to score in eight of their last 15 away games.

Portugal Preview

Portugal’s most recent game in the World Cup qualifying campaign was a 0-3 win over Latvia back in June, but they have participated in the Confederations Cup between the middle of June to the beginning of July. The Portuguese suffered a penalty-shootout defeat at the hands of Chile in the Semi-finals, but managed to beat Mexico on penalties for the third spot. Their form over the past eleven months has seen Portugal lose just three of their last 14 games across all competitions. Portugal’s sole defeat throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign came on the road in Switzerland in the opening group fixture. They have won five games in a row now and find themselves in second spot in the group A table with 15 points to their name after six rounds, just three points behind the current leaders Switzerland. Portugal have scored an amazing tally of 22 goals in six rounds throughout this campaign, including 11 from their topscorer Cristiano Ronaldo. Andre Silva has also played a vital part in Portugal’s performance in this term, helping the team with six goals. At home, the Portuguese have only lost once in their last nine home games across all competitions, but their recent form has seen them win just once in the last five games.

Portugal Team News

Pedro Amaral has been called up to replace the injured Yuri Ribeiro, while Bruno Fernandes will replace Pizzi, as he is also missing through injury.

Faroe Islands Preview

Faroe Islands have endured a mixed run of form over the past five months, registering two wins, four defeats and two draws in their last eight games across all competitions. They kicked off this World Cup qualifying campaign in an unexpected manner, registering a nil-nil home draw against Hungary in the first round along with a 0-2 win in Latvia in the second one. However, they haven’t won a single game since then and the most worrying fact is that they have failed to score in their most recent four qualifiers. The Faroese have only collected one point from their last four qualifying games and have conceded at least two goals in three of these. The minnows currently sit in 4th in the group table with just five points under their belts after six rounds, one point more than Andorra and two points more than the bottom-placed Latvia. Away from home, Faroe Islands have only won four of their last 15 away games across all competitions and are currently on a two-game winless run. The most worrying fact is that they have failed to score in each of their most recent two away games in this World Cup qualifying campaign.

Faroe Islands Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Faroe Islands ahead of this trip.
