Olympiacos vs Rijeka Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The Greek Super League champions Olympiakos Piraeus will take on the Croatian 1.HNL winners Rijeka at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie. Olympiakos Piraeus suffered a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of Atromitos in a friendly game last week. On the flip side, Rijeka lost 0-2 at home against Dinamo Zagreb at the weekend in the 5th round of the 1.HNL league. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Olympiakos Piraeus have been a tough nut to crack in their Champions League home fixtures over the past years, so I’m expecting them to maximize their home advantage and to grab a victory here. I’m also backing Rijeka to get on the scoresheet as they managed to find the back of the net at least once in 13 of their last 15 away games across all competitions.

Olympiacos Preview

Olympiakos Piraeus’ form over the past two months has been a complete mixed bag, registering four draws, three wins and two victories in their last nine games across all competitions. They have struggled for form in pre-season, but they looked strong against Partizan in their 5-3 aggregate victory in the Champions League third qualifying round. Olympiakos Piraeus have been dominating the Greek league over the past 20 years, winning 19 titles in this term. Last year, they managed to win their seventh Super League title in a row with six points more than the runner-ups PAOK. Olympiakos are a side with a lot of experience in the Champions League, although they missed out the previous season following a defeat at the hands of Hapoel Beer Sheva in the third qualifying round. Their recent home form in the Champions League has been solid as they have only lost two of their last nine home fixtures. Those two defeats came at the hands of Bayern Munich and Arsenal in the 2015/16 season. Olympiakos have been pretty active throughout this transfer window as they brought in eight new players for a total fee of €10.8 million. Their most notable departure has been Dimitrios Siovas who left the club for a move to Leganes for €3 million.

Olympiacos Team News

Tarik Elyounoussi is a doubt, while Alberto Botia is out through injury.

Rijeka Preview

Rijeka have won the 1.HNL league title last season for the first time in their history, finishing at the top of the table with just two points more than Dinamo Zagreb. Furthermore, Rijeka did the domestic double soon after that following a 1-3 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in the final. In comparison with Wednesday's opponents, Rijeka had to play two qualifying rounds in order to reach this stage of the competition. They picked up a 7-2 victory over TNS in the second qualifying round, but they had a difficult tie against Salzburg in the previous round. They managed to draw 1-1 at Salzburg in the first leg and this was enough to see them through as the second leg ended in a nil-nil draw. This is only their second Champions League campaign after they were humiliated 6-1 by Partizan Belgrade in the second qualifying round back in 1999. Rijeka’s recent record in Europe has been decent as they are currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak since a 3-0 loss at the hands of Aberdeen in the 2015/16 Europa League second qualifying round. Away from home, Rijeka were on a five-game unbeaten streak prior to their 1-0 loss at Osijeka in their most recent trip a fortnight ago.

Rijeka Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Rijeka ahead of this trip.
