Nottingham Forest vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday (30th) afternoon (15:00) fixture sees two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship do battle. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Nottingham Forest will be aiming to bounce back after a horror showing on Boxing Day that saw them lose 3-0 at home to manager less Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls were one up after five minutes, two up at half-time and the game was gone from Forest in the 65th minute and they failed to net even a consolation goal. Sunderland also had a poor showing on Boxing Day as they were beaten 3-0 at Bramall Lane by Sheffied United. The Black Cats can have few complaints about a game in which they were a clear second best. The reverse fixture between these teams came in September and Forest won that one 1-0 through a Daryl Murphy goal. It put to an end a four-game unbeaten run in meetings between the pair for the Black Cats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Forest should win this game but given the no show at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day I prefer to look elsewhere to find the value in this game. The Tricky Trees have scored around 55% of their goals in the second-half, the Black Cats have scored around 60% so backing the second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes looks a sensible play. Joe Worrall was a threat from set-pieces for Forest last time out and in a game where neither side are blessed with an in-form scoring option then he looks worth an each-way interest in the goalscorer markets.

Nottingham Forest Preview

It is now just four points from their last six games for Forest who are now set in middle table in 13th place. After this game, they have a difficult run with each of their next five against top-half opponents. At the City Ground, they have lost two of their last three and shipped seven goals in these fixtures. Just one of their last six in front of their own fans has seen both teams find the back of the net. Four of the last five for the Tricky Trees have gone over 2.5 goals with two of these going over 3.5. Forest are second in the goals per game table with an average of 3.08 goals per fixture.

Nottingham Forest Team News

Matt Mills, Tendayi Darikwa, Jack Hobbs (all unknown), Chris Cohen and Danny Fox (both knee problems) are doubts

Sunderland Preview

It has been a mixed bag of late for the Black Cats with two victories, two draws and two defeats from their last six. They sit in 22nd but six teams are separated by just six points at the bottom. Away from the Stadium of Light, they have lost three of their last five but did win at Burton and draw at Wolves recently. The 22 they have conceded on their travels gives them the joint-third worst road defence. Just two of their last six have gone over 2.5 goals and this has been when their opponents have netted three times. Sunderland have netted just three times in their last five and eight in their last nine.

Sunderland Team News

Lee Cattermole (thigh), Didier Ndong (ankle), Lewis Grabban (calf), Jonny Williams (shoulder), Lamine Kone (knee) and Patrick McNair (groin) are all doubts. Duncan Watmore (cruciate) has been ruled out for the season
