Nottingham Forest vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) Championship game from the City Ground features two sides who have won two of their opening three matches. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Forest will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season after going down 2-1 at Oakwell on Tuesday night. Barnsley took the lead on three minutes but the East Midlands side bounced back on the 26th minute through Daryl Murphy but they could not hold out for a point. Middlesbrough made it two wins in a row with a home victory over Burton Albion on Tuesday night. Britt Assombalonga was the hero of the day as he netted a brace for the North-Eastern side. These two sides were in different leagues last season but have met many times in recent seasons. The head-to-head record is mixed with two wins each and two games ending all-square in their last six meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Middlesbrough are fancied to do well this season but they need to show something away from home before I am backing them at such short odds. Forest have the attacking talent to give them a guy so I would swerve the match markets. It is tough to know if Forest open style will lead to a game of goals or if the defensive style of Boro means it will be a tight game. I think it might be worth a little buy of the time of the first goal for either side. The visitors have netted in the opening thirty minutes of their last game with the hosts having scored four of their six league goals in the first-half.

Nottingham Forest Preview

It is two wins and one defeat from their three league games for Forest but this is enough for an early league position of fifth. The Tricky Trees are showing a real commitment to the attacking game which leads to a lot of goals scored but also shipping quite a few. At home, they have played twice this season winning in the Championship and in the League Cup. This is reflective over strong form at the City Ground since Mark Warburton took over with four wins, one draw and just one defeat in their last six. Only two sides (Reading and Brentford) have seen more of the ball than Forest in the Championship this season. Andreas Bouchalakis and Daryl Murphy have netted twice in the league while Barrie McKay and Kieran Dowell have grabbed one each.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro also have an identical record to Forest with two and one defeat though their defeat came in the opening game. Just one of their next five fixtures is against a side expected to finish in the top six (and that is against an out of sorts Villa) so this is a good chance for them to get some form together. On the road, you have to go back to August 21st, 2016 for the last time Middlesbrough won an away game. The North-Eastern side have netted in just one of their last ten on their travels. Just Norwich and Reading have a better pass success than Middlesbrough this season. Assombalonga (two) and Gestede (one) have their league goals this season but Patrick Bamford is averaging 3.3 shots per game so must be due soon.
