Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday early evening (17:30) Championship fixture is live on SKYTV and marks the debut of new Forest boss Aitor Karanka. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Nottingham Forest will be looking to build on an impressive 4-2 defeat of Arsenal in the FA Cup in a game that saw Eric Lichaj net twice, Ben Brerton and Kieran Dowell convert penalties and Joe Worrall get dismissed. In the league, their last match was on New Year’s Day and they picked up a useful point at Elland Road. Aston Villa were victims of a Third-Round shock as they suffered a 3-1 home loss against Peterborough despite Keinan Davis giving them the lead. They were last in Championship action on January 1st where they hammered Bristol City 5-0 thanks to a brace from Robert Snodgrass and one each from Conor Hourihane, Scott Hogan and Birkir Bjarnason. The reverse fixture came in September at Villa Park and the home side won that game 2-1. Albert Adomah had put Villa ahead before Daryl Murphy drew the Tricky Trees level until the match was decided by a Conor Hourihane strike.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The road side are the favourites for the game but given the confidence they will have from their victory over Arsenal and the new man in the dugout in Aitor Karanka I think they look worth backing in the draw no bet market against a side who have won just one of their last four on the road and lost at home to Peterborough in the FA Cup Third Round. Aitor Karanka is a man not knowing for playing attacking football but he will have had little time to change things in a week and he will likely let the team play a similar way to what they did against Arsenal. This means that over 2.5 goals look a good bet especially as Villa are capable of punishing sides on the break.

Nottingham Forest Preview

It was a poor festive period for Forest who picked up just two points from their four fixtures though a cup victory over Arsenal will have boosted morale. As will the presence in the dugout of Aitor Karanka with the Spaniard taking over a side in 14th place eight points above relegation and 11 off the play-offs. At the City Ground, they need to make this a fortress again having lost three of their last four in the league and each of their last two. They have netted just four times in their last five Championship home games with blanks in three of these. Karanka was known for his work with the defence at Middlesbrough and he needs to improve a unit that has shipped 42 times this season the fifth worst in the division. Kieran Dowell is their leading scorer with eight goals this campaign and a goal in the FA Cup last time out but he has just one in the last six in the league.

Nottingham Forest Team News

Daryl Murphy (knock) is a doubt while Joe Worrall will miss out through suspension.

Aston Villa Preview

It was a decent festive period for Villa who won two, drew one and lost one of their four fixtures. They sit in fifth place just five points behind Derby in second with each of their next four against teams in the bottom-half. Away from Villa Park, they have taken just four points from their last four though that victory did come at Boro last time on the road. The 14 they have conceded on their travels gives them the joint-second best defensive record in the division. Three of the last four the Midlands side have played have gone over 2.5 goals while just three of their last eight have seen both teams find the back of the net. Just ten of the 24 goals they have conceded this season have come in the first-half.

Aston Villa Team News

Chris Samba (hamstring), Glenn Whelan (illness), Scott Hogan, Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (all ankle) are doubts while Jonathan Kodjia (also ankle) is a long-term absentee.
