Norwich City vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

Norwich City v Sunderland, Match Prediction

This game on Sunday afternoon (13:00) is referred to as the ‘friendly cup’ between two sides with good off the pitch relations. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Norwich started the season with a decent looking point away to highly-fancied Fulham. The Canaries were behind for much of the game after a Russell Martin own-goal but a Nelson Oliveira strike was enough to give them a point. Sunderland also claimed a point on the opening day of the season as they drew 1-1 at home to Derby. They went behind to an early Bradley Johnson strike but managed to get back in it with a James Vaughan penalty and that was where the scoring finished. The East Anglian side have a decent record against Sunderland going unbeaten in their last six but the Black Cats did win 3-0 on their last visit to Carrow Road which came in April 2016.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both these teams are a work in progress with some positive signs and some things need working on. I think the ceiling of a good Norwich performance is higher than that of Sunderland but the floor is also lower as a Simon Grayson side will always be hard working and well-drilled. If you have to bet on the match I would lean towards the draw but I prefer the player markets. I really like the look of George Honeyman as a first goalscorer bet at generous odds. He registered three shots on the opening weekend and then netted for Sunderland against Bury in midweek. I also think his colleague Lee Cattermole has to be worth a play as he has been released to go forward more from midfield. For those looking for a Norwich player Marley Watkins and James Madison could be some value but I will stick with the Sunderland pair as away scorers tend to be over-priced.

Norwich City Preview

At home, the Canaries were excellent with a joint-third highest league total of 15 victories and they will look to make Carrow Road a fortress again this season. No team scored more goals in front of their own fans than Norwich who netted 55 in 23 matches. It finished 1-1 in their last game and the Canaries had more shots on target and more of the ball than Fulham in that match. Marley Watkins can consider himself unlucky as he had three shots and all three hit the target yet somehow he did not find the back of the net. In the League Cup, Norwich booked their place in the next round by defeating Swindon 3-2 in an open encounter. The Canaries goals came from Cameron Jerome, Wes Hoolahan and James Maddison who netted one each.

Norwich City Team News

Harry Toffolo (muscle injury) is rated day-to-day while Timm Klose (leg) is a doubt. Matt Jarvis (hip), Louis Thompson (also hip) and Alex Pritchard (ankle) are long-term absentees.

Sunderland Preview

On the road, Sunderland struggled last season winning just three of their 19 in the Premier League. A battle for goals was a real issue on their travels for the Black Cats with just 13 netted. The North-Eastern side did not see as much of the ball as their opponents in the opening game but this seemed a deliberate tactic as they looked to counter-attack with the pace of McGeady, Vaughan and Grabban. Lee Cattermole was a lot more of an attacking threat then he has been in the past as the presence of him alongside Didier Ndong enabled him to show more creativity and he had time for three shots. It was job done for Sunderland in midweek who travelled to Bury and battled through to the next round with a 1-0 success. A 69th minute George Honeyman goal was enough to see them progress.

Sunderland Team News

Bryan Oviedo (calf) and Josh Maja (knee) are closing in on returns as is Duncan Watmore (cruciate). Patrick McNair (cruciate) is still a few weeks away from being back in action.
