Norwich City vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Norwich City will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak when they welcome Southampton to the Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Norwich City picked up an impressive 3-0 home win over Derby County in the Championship on Monday, with Nelson Oliveira scoring a hat-trick for Alex Neil’s side. Meanwhile, Southampton were beaten 3-0 on the road at Everton last time out in the Premier League, conceding all three goals in the last 17 minutes of the game. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Norwich City Preview

Norwich City have finally returned to winning ways in the Championship on Monday, and they did in style with an impressive 3-0 home victory over Derby County. Prior to this win, they were on a three-game winless streak in the Championship, registering two defeats and a draw in this term. This was Norwich’s only third win in their last ten games in the Championship. However, the Canaries find themselves only in 9th position in the standings with 37 points to their name after 25 rounds, already five points off the top six. Norwich managed a decent tally of 41 goals in the Championship this season, but they really struggled to keep the ball out of their net. They have one of the most leakiest defences in the division, conceding 37 goals in 25 rounds. The Canaries can count on their home form ahead of this clash, as they have only lost three of their 13 home fixtures in all competitions this season, while nine are in the process. Furthermore, Alex Neil’s are unbeaten in the last three home meetings with Southampton, keeping a clean sheet in each of these. The bad news is that Norwich have failed to win a single game in the FA Cup over the past three years since a 0-3 win on the road at Peterborough back in January 2013.

Southampton Preview

On the contrary, Southampton head into this clash low on confidence as they suffered defeats in each of their last three games in the Premier League. The Saints looked awful at the back over the past week, conceding at least two goals in each of their last three league fixtures. Claude Puel’s men currently sit in 10th place in the league table tied on 24 points with the 9th-placed Bournemouth, and already 15 points off the top five. Scoring goals has been Southampton’s main issue throughout their Premier League campaign, as they have one of the worst offensive records in the division with just 19 goals under their belts after 20 rounds. Charlie Austin is the Saints’ topscorer at the moment in time, but the 27-year-old striker got injured in Southampton’s 1-1 draw against Hapoel Beer Sheva in a Europa League fixture back in the middle of December 2016. Away from home, the Saints have only won three of their last ten games in all competitions and only scored seven goals in the process. The good news is that Southampton have only lost once in their last six away games in the FA Cup. Last year, the Saints were eliminated in this round of the competition, following a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of finalists Crystal Palace.

Norwich City Team News

Louis Thompson and Matthew Jarvis are both doubts, but Graham Dorrans is still out with a ligament injury.

Southampton Team News

Matthew Robert Targett, Jeremy Pied and Charlie Austin are all expected to be sidelined with injuries, while Florin Gardos, Cedric Soares and Jake Hesketh are all doubts. The good news is that Alex McCarthy is back in training following his hamstring injury.

Betting Predictions and Tips

The Saints looked terrible over the past week, and it seems they have big problems at the back at the moment. Furthermore, their away form hasn’t been too good, while Norwich have only lost three games this season. I’m expecting an open match with at least three goals as both sides have been involved in high-scoring affairs recently. I’m also backing Norwich to secure at least a draw here, as they have been in good shape at Carrow Road this season and they also hold a decent head-to-head home record over Southampton.
