Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Newcastle United face Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park on 13/08/17 as the home side end their one-year exodus from the Premier League. It’s been a tale of frustration for both sides in the transfer market thus far, with neither strengthening quite how they would’ve anticipated. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It’s set to be a raucous atmosphere at St. James’ this weekend, as Newcastle return to the Premier League and face one of the division’s top teams. Given that Spurs are just that, and Newcastle haven’t really added too much to their squad, I’m expecting the away side to pick up the win in their opening game.

Newcastle United Preview

Rafa Benitez has made no secret of his frustration at not getting his hands on top targets, with the Newcastle squad looking particularly familiar to the side which won promotion to the Championship, despite Mike Ashley promising that funds would be made available. A club the size of Newcastle should be a mainstay in the Premier League and they will now look to put troubles of the previous few seasons behind them to consolidate their place in the top flight. Dwight Gayle netted 23 goals en route to the Magpies winning the Championship last term and the 27-year-old will once again be the man with the expectancy on his shoulders to produce the goods, although he may miss out the opener through injury. Newcastle’s last game in the Premier League was against Tottenham at St. James’ Park and they will be looking for a repeat performance from that day, where they humiliated Mauricio Pochettino’s side with an emphatic 5-1 victory.

Newcastle United Team News

DeAndre Yedlin is ruled out with a hamstring problem, while Dwight Gayle is also struggling with the same injury.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Tottenham’s summer has been ultimately defined by a lack of activity, having yet to make any signings before the opening game of the season - as well as losing a starter in Kyle Walker to a fellow title rival in Manchester City. However, they have been able to keep hold of the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, although it’s hard to believe that they can go the whole summer without bringing in new recruits and challenge for the title. Spurs finished last season by scoring thirteen goals in their final two matches and have a forward in Kane who is chasing his third successive Premier League Golden Boot. After being the nearly men for the past two seasons running, Mauricio Pochettino will surely have his sights set on the Premier League title once again this season. Despite ending last season with five wins from their last six away games, dropped points early in the campaign on the road ended up costing Spurs dearly and that will need to be an area they improve this time around.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Heung-Min Son (arm) and Erik Lamela (hip) are both ruled out for Spurs. Kieran Trippier (ankle) is a doubt so Eric Dier may fill in at full-back, while Danny Rose and Victor Wanyama (both knee) could miss out.
