Newcastle United Preview

A cup run is long overdue at St. James’ Park and Rafa Benitez perhaps showed his intent for the FA Cup by naming a strong lineup as Newcastle comfortably beat Luton Town 3-1 in the third round. A blistering ten-minute spell in the second half saw the Magpies wrap up the victory, as Ayoze Perez scored a six-minute double, before Jonjo Shelvey put Newcastle into an unassailable lead in the 39th minute. Danny Hylton scored a consolation early in the second half for the League Two leaders, but Newcastle held on to set up a fourth round tie away to Norwich or Chelsea. This latest result means Benitez’s men come into this game off the back of two successive victories, the first time they have done so since September, and have lost just one of their last five games. That came against Manchester City, who have been comfortably seeing off all who have come their way in recent times, and to lose only by a single goal is something of an achievement. Newcastle currently sit 13th in the table, but the general consensus is they will need reinforcements in January to consolidate their place in the Premier League next season. Attacking reinforcements will be the priority, with Dwight Gayle and Joselu leading the way with three Premier League goals apiece.

Newcastle United Team News

Jesus Gamez (ankle), Florian Lejeune (foot) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (back) are all missing. Rob Elliot (thigh) and Chancel Mbemba (knee) are doubts.

Swansea City Preview

Swansea City will be forced to face a replay with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the FA Cup, after the two sides drew 0-0 at Molineux last weekend. Carlos Carvalhal used the game as an opportunity to look a some of the more fringe players in the Swans squad, and he will probably have been left feeling somewhat appeased after his side managed to secure a 0-0 draw against the Championship high-flyers. Carlvahal’s penultimate game as Sheffield Wednesday boss came against Wolves and he will have to face them all over again. Starting his Premier League career with one win and one defeat, the Portuguese manager will be relatively happy with the beginning he has made to life in the top flight, though he will be fully aware of just how important this upcoming fixture is. Swansea face both Liverpool and Arsenal in back-to-back games at the Liberty Stadium following their arduous trip to the north east, making it vital they get a return of points of sorts this weekend. Swansea will now be looking to win successive away league games for the first time in almost 12 months here, having defeated Watford in their previous away outing.

Swansea City Team News

Kyle Naughton is suspended, while Angel Rangel, Ki Sung-Yueng (both calf) and Tammy Abraham (hip).
