Newcastle United vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Newcastle United host Stoke City at St. James’ Park on 16/09/17 as both teams look to build on positive results from the weekend prior. Newcastle picked up their first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Swansea, while Stoke held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

There will be a real feel-good factor surrounding Newcastle after such a positive result last weekend. For that reason, I’m expecting a home win, with the team currently in good form after back-to-back league wins.

Newcastle United Preview

Rafa Benitez will have been delighted with the way his team performed despite his absence at Swansea City on Sunday afternoon, as Newcastle ran out 1-0 winners in south Wales last time out. A stubborn defensive performance will have been the most pleasing aspect of the game for Benitez, with Jamaal Lascelles’ 76th minute header proving to be a real bonus for the Magpies to give them the extra two points. It rounded off an excellent captain’s display for Lascelles, who was excellent in defence alongside Ciaran Clark. It’s the first time the club have won back-to-back Premier League games since December 2015, where they managed to beat Liverpool and Tottenham in successive weeks before eventually being relegated. With just one defeat in their last seven home Premier League games stretching back to their last top flight campaign, Benitez has enjoyed success in front of the Geordie faithful during his time as Toon boss. Midfielder Mikel Merino has looked a shrewd acquisition since joining on loan from Borussia Dortmund, adding creativity to the midfield and will be a key player in this game.

Newcastle United Team News

Defenders Chancel Mbemba and Paul Dummett (both hamstring) are ruled out for Newcastle here, while Aleksandr Mitrovic is banned.

Stoke City Preview

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was the hero of the hour at home to Manchester United last weekend, as the Cameroonian international endeared himself to Stoke fans in perfect fashion. He finished off an excellent run and cross from Mame-Biram Diouf to open the scoring, only for Marcus Rashford to equalise on the stroke of half-time. Romelu Lukaku put United in front for the first time at the start of the second half, but Choupo-Moting netted with a far-post header from Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner to ensure his side came away with a well-earned point. Mark Hughes was least pleased with Jose Mourinho after the game but can feel no ill will towards the effort of his team in recent weeks, who have taken five points from a possible nine in tough fixtures against Arsenal (h), West Brom (a) and United (h). Next up at the Bet365 Stadium is Chelsea, making this game all the more important as they look to get points on the board early in the season. The Potters have struggled away from home this calendar year, winning just one of their last ten on the road in the Premier League.

Stoke City Team News

Ryan Shawcross (back), Geoff Cameron (hamstring) and Ibrahim Afellay (knee) are all doubts for Stoke here. Stephen Ireland (leg) is still not ready to return to first-team action.
