Newcastle United vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Newcastle United’s four-match unbeaten run ended with a customary loss at Anfield, as the team suffered a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool. Mohamed Salah provided the opening goal in a match once again, while Sadio Mane was able to add a crucial second for the Merseyside outfit. Newcastle’s best chance of the game came through a long-range effort from Mohamed Diame. Southampton failed to make home advantage count, as the team were only able to get a goalless draw with Stoke City. Even though the Saints asked a lot of questions of Stoke’s defence, Jack Butland was able to come up with excellent saves over the 90 minutes.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Newcastle have struggled when it comes to games against Southampton, as their last win over this opponent came in 2013. This extended wait for a victory is unlikely to go away anytime soon, as Southampton’s form has been decent – even when on the road. At the same time, Newcastle’s lack of goals is likely to end this game as a draw.

This is a game between two clubs who have lacked any kind of a zest going forward. However, Newcastle have scored in the last four matches at St James’ Park, while Southampton have scored at least once in the last five away games. Historically, this meeting at St James’ Park has produced goals at both ends in five out of the last six meetings. I see an excellent value on offer to back both teams to score.

Newcastle United Preview

Newcastle have been unable to do away with the threat of relegation even after suffering just one defeat in the last five games. The club’s next two league matches are against their relegation rivals and this presents Newcastle with the best opportunity to pull away from the drop zone. It is difficult to rule out Newcastle from relegation, as the club’s lack of firepower has led to the team remaining on the fringes of the bottom three. There are only nine matches left in the Premier League campaign and Newcastle remain only two points above the drop. Dwight Gayle has scored only twice in the last 10 games, but he is the top scorer at Newcastle with five goals.

Newcastle United Team News

Jonjo Shelvey (knee) is being monitored for potential availability in this game, while Matt Ritchie (illness) and Islam Slimani (thigh) continue to be unavailable for Rafa Benitez.

Southampton Preview

The Southampton team may have improved a lot compared to their form towards the end of 2017, but the team remain in relegation fear even now due to a lack of wins. Over the last six matches, Southampton have been defeated only once, but they have also managed just one win in the same period. Mauricio Pellegrino will need to find out the way to convert these draws into wins. The absence of Charlie Austin reduces the club’s effectiveness in front of goal, as the England striker still remains as the club’s top scorer with six league goals.

Southampton Team News

Steven Davies is a doubt for this game, but Charlie Austin (hamstring) and Maya Yoshida (knee) are certainly unavailable.
