Newcastle United vs Leicester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Newcastle United host Leicester City at St. James’ Park on 09/12/17 in a clash of two sides who have been in opposite spells of form. Newcastle lost 3-1 at Chelsea last weekend, while Leicester were 1-0 winners over Burnley. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Newcastle seriously need three points this weekend, with the team in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle. Leicester have been playing well of late, though they have just one win away from home this season and I’m expecting this to be a much-needed home win.

Newcastle United Preview

Another strong start quickly disintegrated into another defeat for Newcastle at Chelsea last time out, as the reigning champions came out 3-1 winners at Stamford Bridge. Just as was the case at Old Trafford, Dwight Gayle gave Newcastle a shock early lead, though the following onslaught was far too much for them to cope with. Eden Hazard was in fine form for Chelsea and teams far better than Newcastle have failed to cope with the Belgian in this kind of form, with the no.10 netting Chelsea’s first before Alvaro Morata headed in Victor Moses’ cross. Hazard then scored from the penalty spot in the second half, as Newcastle were condemned to their fifth defeat in six matches. Taking just a point from a possible 18 in that time, something needs to change and fast to get them away from dropping into the bottom three. Newcastle sit five points above the drop zone at present, although they also remain only three points off getting back into the top half, with Everton on 18 points and the Magpies sitting on 15. Benitez changed the system to a 3-4-2-1 against Chelsea but may look to set up more offensively this time out, with the passionate Geordie faithful unlikely to settle for their team playing on the counter-attack and behind the ball.

Newcastle United Team News

Jamaal Lascelles (ankle) and Christian Atsu (thigh) are both doubts for this game, while Paul Dummett (hamstring) and Massadio Haidara (knee) are unlikely to return.

Leicester City Preview

Few would’ve anticipated Claude Puel having such an instant impact with Leicester City, particularly following the sceptical reception to his announcement. However, the Foxes moved into the top ten on Saturday afternoon, after completing an impressive 1-0 win at home to Burnley last time out. Demarai Gray scored the only goal of the game, showing great bravery in doing so as he was clattered in the process of finding the back of the net to make the most of his return to the first team. It rounded off what was an extremely successful week for the team, who also defeated Tottenham 2-1 at home prior to defeating Sean Dyche’s men at the weekend. Puel has also been able to consistently pick up points away from home, taking five points from their last three on the road, but will be facing a side who will be determined to take three points here after a winless run. Jamie Vardy has seven goals in 15 appearances this season, but has just two in his last 10 and will be looking to score here just as he did in Leicester’s last visit to St. James’ Park, winning 3-0 during the famous title-winning campaign.

Leicester City Team News

Robert Huth (ankle) and Matty James (achilles) are both set to miss out once more.
