Newcastle United vs Derby County Match Prediction

By Charlotte Louise Bushell

This looks the pick of the ties in the Championship this weekend and kick-off is 3.00pm on Saturday afternoon. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

It has been a disappointing week for Newcastle fans as they were eliminated from the FA Cup on Saturday and then on Tuesday they did not strengthen their squad. They were then held to a 2-2 draw by QPR despite goals from Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey.

Derby comfortably saw off Ipswich 3-0 last time out netting all these goals in the first 45 minutes with one each from Craig Bryson, Tom Ince and Darren Bent. The Rams were sixth ahead of the Friday game where Sheffield Wednesday could pass them.

Newcastle won the last meeting between the pair back in September when Nigel Pearson was still Derby boss. Yoan Gouffran and DeAndre Yedlin got the goals for the Magpies.

Newcastle Preview

Dropping a point at home to QPR was frustrating for Newcastle, and it means they have won just three of their last six home games. These lost points have allowed teams like Reading and Leeds to close the gap on them and make the promotion race close again.

Rotherham, Birmingham and Ipswich, three sides known for their struggles in front of goal are the only ones of the last 11 visitors to Newcastle to have not found the net in league fixtures.

Matt Ritchie has stepped up to take the goal mantle in the absence of Dwight Gayle with the Scot firing in the last four for the North-East side. Daryl Murphy also has a decent ratio in recent matches grabbing five in his last ten in all competitions.

Derby Preview

Back-to-back victories moved Derby into sixth place ahead of the weekend set of fixtures. They won at Ipswich midweek but they have just picked up four points from the possible 12 available to them on the road.

Clean sheets are a feature of the Rams away matches with one or both sides doing this in six of their last eight in the league. Nine of their 14 this season away from home have gone under 2.5 goals.

Tom Ince is in good scoring form with five goals in his last ten matches with four of these coming in away fixtures. Darren Bent is another player with the hot touch having struck in each of the last three and five in the last eight.

Newcastle Team News

Ciaran Clark (head) and Jack Colback (illness) are doubts while Rafa Benitez will give every chance for Dwight Gayle (hamstring) to return from injury. Chancel Mbema is back from African Cup of Nations though Christian Atsu was still playing in a semi-final Thursday night.

Rolando Aarons (broken toe) and Vurnon Anita (ankle) are long-term absentees.

Derby Team News

Max Lowe (groin) and David Nugent (knee) are close to returns while Will Hughes (hamstring) and George Thorne (broken leg) are still a few weeks away from doing so. Craig Forsyth and James Wilson (both cruciate) are both unlikely to play again this season.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I think Derby look good things in the draw/victory double chance market.  The rumours of frictions between Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez mean pressure is starting to show a little in the way they play.  Tom Ince and Darren Bent are just the kind of forwards a Newcastle defence will not want to face. Throw in the revenge aspect for Steve McClaren, and I think you have all the ingredients for a good bet.

Derby will have to score at least once to get anything from this game and chances are they will need to net twice. They look worth chancing to do so here with so many forwards in a rich vein of form.
