Newcastle United host Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park on 21/10/17 in a meeting of two teams who have received huge boosts in the past week or so. Newcastle drew 2-2 away to Southampton last time out, while Crystal Palace stunned Chelsea with a 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both teams impressed during last weekend’s round of fixtures, though a greater sample size of performances suggests this Newcastle team has more quality overall than Crystal Palace, and I’m going for a home win in this one.

Newcastle United Preview

Rafa Benitez will still hold a feeling of curiosity as to how his side were unable to come away from St. Mary’s with three points last weekend. Isaac Hayden struck from the edge of the box to give Newcastle a half-time lead, and the Magpies were just fifteen minutes from victory after Ayoze Perez restored their one-goal advantage two minutes after Manolo Gabbiadini’s equaliser. Despite their strong position, Florian Lejeune’s foul on Shane Long allowed Gabbiadini to pull his team level once again from the penalty spot, leaving the travelling Geordies to settle for a point. For all of the frustration behind that performance, Newcastle fans will have been quickly compensated in their own eyes following the announcement that Mike Ashley has put the club up for sale. As such, there should be a real bounce amongst the supporters this weekend, which may well translate to a strong performance on the pitch, as the prospect of serious investment in the team, combined with Benitez in charge creating real excitement. Taking seven points from a possible nine in their last three at home, Newcastle are proving to be turning St. James’ Park into a difficult ground for opposition teams to face this season.

Newcastle United Team News

Paul Dummett (hamstring) is ruled out for Newcastle once more, with Massadio Haidara (knee) also doubtful.

Crystal Palace Preview

Even the most diehard and loyal of Crystal Palace supporters wouldn’t have been expecting such a strong performance from the Eagles last weekend after they rallied to their first three points of the season with a 2-1 win over Chelsea. It’s fair to say luck hasn’t been on their side this season so they certainly won’t have minded the opener coming in fortunate fashion, with a Cesar Azpilicueta own goal putting them a goal ahead. Tiemoue Bakayoko’s powerful header made it 1-1, but Wilfried Zaha netted on the stroke of half-time to seal a huge win for new boss Roy Hodgson. It was both the first goals and points Palace have picked up all season, as Hodgson now looks to pull off a remarkable comeback after a disastrous start under Frank de Boer. The return of Zaha to the starting XI was a clear boost to the team, adding a level of dynamism and flair previously not present in the side during their goalless drought. He may have to start up front once more for Palace, who still have a severe lack of attacking options thanks to injuries, with last weekend’s result against Chelsea making opposition teams more alert to the threat they do pose.

Crystal Palace Team News

Strikers Christian Benteke (knee) and Connor Wickham (cruciate ligament) are both ruled out for Crystal Palace, though Ruben Loftus-Cheek (thigh) may return.
