Newcastle United vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Sajeesh Soman

It should be an entertaining game at St James’ Park on Saturday as top of the table Newcastle look to get back to winning ways when they entertain fifth-placed Birmingham. The Magpies were involved in a crazy 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest last time out despite taking the lead through Matt Ritchie. Spread around the goal though were two sendings off and two missed penalties. Forest eventually found the way through with goals from Nicklas Bendtner and an own goal from former player James Lascelles.  Birmingham meanwhile had a bad day at the office losing 3-0 to Barnsley who scored through Marc Roberts and a brace from Sam Winnall.

Newcastle preview

A 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest last time out made it back-to-back league losses for the first time since the start of the season for Newcastle. They still sit top of the table but the gap to Brighton in second is just one point now.  The Magpies will need to stop leaking so many goals at home as they sit a remarkable 15th in the division in terms of home defence with Ipswich the only one of the nine visitors to have failed to find the back of the net. This is in contrast to their away form where they have shipped just five goals.

Birmingham preview

A record of three wins, four draws and two defeats from nine games is a pretty decent return for Birmingham with Gary Rowett knowing how to set his side up to break on the counter-attack. This record is that bit more impressive when you consider they have picked up eight points from four away games against sides in the top ten. Both teams to score tends to be a common feature of the Blues away games with six of nine seeing both sides find the back of the net.

Newcastle team news

The Magpies will be pleased that overturned bans for Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett had their red cards overturned and are available for selection here. Jack Colback and Rob Elliot are back in training though this game might come too soon for them to return.

Birmingham team news

Jonathan Spector and David Davis will be missing through suspension while the Midlands side will be without injured quartet Jacques Maghoma, Diego Fabbrini, Paul Caddis and Rhoys Wiggins.

Betting tips and predictions

Despite the two straight defeats I think Newcastle are still the class act in this division.  The loss to Blackburn in the penultimate tie was against the run of play and the defeat to Forest was the result of a freak game where the Magpies had two players sent-off.  I like the look of Newcastle to come out on top here against Birmingham side who were poor in a 3-0 home loss to Barnsley. I would look to side with the home side and to enhance the price play Newcastle and over 2.5 goals which has occurred in five of their six home wins.

In addition take Newcastle in the half-time/full-time market as when they tend to win games they often come out of the blocks fast.
