New Zealand vs Portugal Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Portugal will be aiming to top their FIFA Confederations group A when they take on the already eliminated New Zealand on Saturday afternoon. New Zealand threw away a one-goal lead to succumb to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mexico on Wednesday. Chris Wood gave the All Whites the lead at halftime, but unfortunately, they conceded two goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half. On the other hand, Portugal managed a narrow 0-1 win over the hosts Russia thanks to an early goal from Cristiano Ronaldo. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

This should be a formality game for Portugal, particularly because they need all three points in order to top the group. They should be able to score a couple of goals as well, as New Zealand have the worst defensive record in the group.

New Zealand Preview

It was somehow expected that New Zealand would struggle in this difficult group against Russia, Portugal, and Mexico, but despite their two group defeats, they looked pretty good. They only conceded twice against Russia in the group opener despite the fact that it was a one-sided game. The All Whites had the lead at halftime in the second round against Mexico, but the South Americans managed to score two goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half to grab all three points. New Zealand are rock bottom of the group table with no points to their name after two rounds, which means they will be playing for pride on Saturday as they are already knocked out from the competition. The All Whites are currently on a four-game losing streak across all competitions, scoring just once in the process. Overall, New Zealand have only won three of their last ten games across all competitions. Chris Wood managed to score 27 goals in 44 appearances for Leeds in the previous season, and he also managed to score New Zealand’s sole goal at the tournament on Wednesday against Mexico.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand are only playing for pride in this clash and I think that coach Anthony Hudson will rotate the squad a bit in order to give the young players a chance.

Portugal Preview

On the contrary, Portugal enter the fray on the back of a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions, including a 0-1 win over Russia on Wednesday in the second round of their FIFA Confederations Cup group A. They were very close to pick up all three points in the first round against Mexico as well, but the South Americans fought back from behind twice to secure a 2-2 draw. They sit in second in the standings just because the 1st-placed Mexico have scored one goal more than them. However, they should be able to grab all three points against the bottom-placed New Zealand in order to qualify into the Semi-finals. Overall, the Portuguese have only lost once in their last nine games across all competitions while winning seven in the process. The most impressive fact is that Portugal managed to keep a clean sheet in six of their last nine games across all competitions. Furthermore, Portugal are currently on a three-game winning streak away from home, keeping a clean sheet in each of these. All Portugal’s three goals at the tournament have been scored by different players in the shape of Alves Cedric, Ricardo Quaresma and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal Team News

Portugal have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this tie, but we may see Ricardo Quaresma in the starting lineup after he was rested against Russia.
