N.Ireland vs Switzerland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Northern Ireland host Switzerland at Windsor Park on 09/11/17 in the first of their two-legged World Cup playoff. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Northern Ireland may be prohibitive underdogs in this meeting, but they boast an extremely impressive home record that they will be looking to take advantage of here. Switzerland were superb in qualifying and will be a huge test for the home side, but I’m expecting Northern Ireland to come away with an early lead in the tie here.

N.Ireland Preview

Michael O’Neill finds himself on the brink of history once again with his Northern Ireland squad, incredibly finding themselves just two games away from back-to-back major tournaments. Having come through a tough group which featured Germany, Czech Republic and Norway, they will not be daunted by the prospect of facing Switzerland here, especially at home. Northern Ireland won four of their five home qualifiers during the group stages, with all of the victories coming to nil - only Germany were able to find the back of the net at Windsor Park, and that came after they had already secured 2nd place in the group. Germany, along with Croatia, are the only side to defeat Northern Ireland on their home turf since September 2013, losing just two of 16 at home in that time. The Euro 2016 qualifying campaign had much to do with the goals of Kyle Lafferty, though the goals were far more spread this time around, with both he and Josh Magennis netting three each. Their success was based more on a solid defence that kept seven clean sheets from ten matches.

N.Ireland Team News

Martin O’Neill has no injury concerns to contend with here.

Switzerland Preview

Switzerland received a real morale blow after only being forced into a playoff place in their final group fixture with Portugal. Having started the group stages with nine wins from nine games, the Swiss needed just a point from their trip to Lisbon to book their place at Russia, but came away with a 2-0 defeat following an own goal from defender Johan Djourou and a second-half strike from Andre Silva. As a result, it was Portugal who came through as group winners, as Switzerland now look to pick themselves up and go again after being given a second chance of qualifying. Before their defeat to Portugal, Vladimir Petkovic’s side were unbeaten in six consecutive away games, winning five and drawing the other, including four successive competitive qualifying wins on the road. Their previous away defeat before that came coincidentally in Ireland, losing to the Republic of Ireland 1-0 back in March 2013. Striker Haris Seferovic was Switzerland’s leading scorer during qualifying, netting four goals in Group B and he along with the likes of Stephan Lichtsteiner, RIcardo Rodriguez, Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri will all be crucial for Switzerland here. Having made the last three World Cups, this group of players could now make history by becoming the first Switzerland team to reach four successive World Cups in their history.

Switzerland Team News

The experienced Johan Djourou, Valentin Stocker, Josip Drmic and Valentin Stocker have all been left out here.
