Montpellier vs Strasbourg Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Newly-promoted Strasbourg will be looking for their second Ligue 1 victory in a row when they travel to the Stade de la Mosson to take on Montpellier on Saturday evening. Montpellier suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss on the road at Toulouse last time out in Ligue 1, despite the fact they had a better ball possession and more goal attempts than the hosts. On the contrary, the newcomers Strasbourg won 3-0 at home over Lille last weekend, with Jonas Martin, Dimitri Lienard, and Jeremy Grimm all getting on the scoresheet in the last 15 minutes of the game. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Strasbourg have enjoyed a much better run of form than Montpellier recently, but Montpellier were one of the best home sides in Ligue 1 last term. On the flip side, Strasbourg are currently on a four-game winless streak on the road across all competitions. It’s difficult to separate these two sides at the moment, but I’m not expecting a high-scoring game.

Montpellier Preview

Montpellier did well to beat Caen 1-0 at home in the Ligue 1 opener a week ago, but succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat on the road at Toulouse last weekend. They had good ball possession and several goalscoring chances, but they struggled in the final third as they only delivered just one shot on target. This leaves them oin 11th spot in the standings tied on three points with other four teams. They were expected to struggle in the final third after they sold last season’s top scorer Steve Mounie to Huddersfield Town and Ryad Boudebouz to Real Betis this summer for a total fee of €20 million. They brought in Giovanni Sio from Rennes as a replacement for Mounie, but the 28-year-old striker has been very quiet so far. Souleymane Camara scored Montpellier’s sole goal of the season so far, although he had a disappointing campaign last term, scoring just once in 28 appearances. On home soil, Montpellier are currently on a three-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, but they have only won two of their last seven home games in Ligue 1. The good news is that Montpellier have only lost once in their last six home meetings with Strasbourg across all competitions while winning two.

Montpellier Team News

Jonathan Ligali, Morgan Poaty, Pierrick Fito, Kevin Berigaud and Ellyes Skhiri are all doubts ahead of this tie.

Strasbourg Preview

The newly-promoted Strasbourg began their Ligue 1 adventure with a humiliating 4-0 away loss at Lyon a week ago, but bounced back with a solid 3-0 home win over Lille last weekend. Actually, it was one of the craziest games in recent history as Lille used all their substitutions in the first half and their goalkeeper Mike Maignan was sent off just after the hour mark. Coach Marcelo Bielsa decided to sacrifice his striker Nicolas De Preville and put him between the sticks. However, after Lille conceded the first goal, Bielsa sent De Preville back in attack and put Ibrahim Amadou in goal, which means that Lille had used three different players in goal in that game. As for Strasbourg, they collected the first three points in Ligue 1 and they will now look for another positive result when they travel to Stade de la Mosson on Saturday. Strasbourg’s form over the past five months has seen them lose just once in their last 18 games across all competitions. In addition, Strasbourg were on a six-game undefeated run across all competitions prior to their 4-0 loss at Lyon in their most recent trip.
