Montpellier vs Caen Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Montpellier welcome Caen at the Stade de la Mosson on Saturday evening for the first round of the new Ligue 1 campaign. Montpellier come into this tie on the back of a 1-1 draw against Lyon, with Giovanni Sio scoring the goal for la Paillade. Meanwhile, Caen lost 0-1 at home at the hands of Angers in a friendly fixture last Saturday. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Both sides have been up and down in the pre-season, and both seems to struggle at the back at the moment. It’s difficult to predict the winner, but I’m expecting an open affair with goals at both ends of the field. Actually, three of the last four meetings between these two sides have seen both getting on the scoresheet. Furthermore, three of the last four games between these two sides ended with at least three goals scored.

Montpellier Preview

Montpellier kicked off their pre-season campaign in a disappointing manner, registering back-to-back defeats at the hands of the lowly Rodez and Clermont. However, they looked much better over the past two weeks, recording two 1-1 draws against Toulouse and Lyon along with a narrow 1-0 win over Saint-Etienne. Montpellier barely avoided relegation last term as they finished 15th in the standings, three points clear of the bottom three. Conceding has been Montpellier’s main issue last term as they had one of the worst defensive records in the division with 66 goals conceded in 38 rounds. However, it seems that they have strengthened a little bit at the back this summer, as they brought Auxerre’s right-back Ruben Aguilar and Rennes’ centre-back Pedro Mendes. I think that Montpellier will struggle a bit at the other end of the pitch this season as they have sold their last season’s top scorer Steve Mounie to Huddersfield Town for €13m. Giovanni Sio joined from Rennes for €2.2 million, and he could be a decent replacement for Mounie, as the 28-year-old striker scored nine goals for Les Rouges et Noirs last season.

Montpellier Team News

Ryad Boudebouz and Jonathan Ligali are both missing through injury ahead of this tie.

Caen Preview

On the contrary, Caen started their pre-season campaign with three consecutive wins over Avranches, Le Havre and Lorient, but lost their most recent two games against Rennes and Angers. Caen were lucky to survive in Ligue 1 last season as they finished in 17th in the standings, just one point clear of the drop zone. Similar to their Saturday’s opponents, Caen have had problems in keeping the ball out of their own net as they allowed 65 goals in 38 rounds. However, they have tried to fix their defensive issues throughout this summer transfer window, as they brought centre-back Alexander Djiku from SC Bastia for €2m and Bordeaux former right-back Frederic Guilbert for €1.5m. Stef Peeters has also joined the team from Saint-Truiden for €1.5m along with Baissama Sankoh from Guingamp for €500,000. Last season, Caen only managed to collect 14 points on the road, while winning just three of their 19 league trips. They're recent away form has seen them win three, draw four and lose three of their last ten games across all competitions. Furthermore, Caen have only won once in their last five visits to the Stade de la Mosson.

Caen Team News

Jeff Louis is out through a knee injury ahead of this trip.
