Monaco vs Montpellier Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Monaco will look to close the gap at the top of the Ligue 1 table when they welcome Montpellier at the Stade Louis II on Friday night. Monaco managed a comfortable 0-4 victory on the road at Lille last time out in Ligue 1 thanks to a brace from Radamel Falcao and two first-half goals from Stevan Jovetic and Rachid Ghezzal. On the other hand, Montpellier managed a creditable nil-nil home draw against Paris Saint Germain last weekend, in a game in which they allowed Les Parisiens to deliver just one shot on target. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m backing Monaco to put their midweek defeat at the hands of Porto behind them and to bounce back with a victory in this one. The Monegasque have won their three home league games so far this season while scoring twelve goals. On the other hand, Montpellier have won just one of their three away league games so far this season and are winless in their eleven meetings with Stade Louis II.

Monaco Preview

Monaco have enjoyed a near-perfect start to the new Ligue 1 season, having lost just once in seven league fixtures. Their sole defeat came at the hands of Nice three weeks ago, but bounced back with two impressive victories over Strasbourg and Lille, scoring seven goals and conceding none in this term. The Monegasques find themselves in second in the Ligue 1 table with 18 points under their belts after seven rounds, just one point behind the current leaders Paris Saint Germain. Despite their good run of form in Ligue 1, Monaco come into this tie on the back of a heavy 0-3 home loss at the hands of Porto in their Champions League midweek clash. This leaves them at the bottom of the group G table with just one point to their name after two rounds, having scored just one goal in the process. Prior to this midweek defeat, Monaco were on a four-game winning streak across all competitions at home, scoring at least three goals in each of these. They have won all of their three home league fixtures so far this season, scoring twelve goals in this term. In addition, the Monegasque side are undefeated in their eleven home meetings with Montpellier in Ligue 1, keeping eight clean sheets in the process. Radamel Falcao has been in incredible shape in this early part of the season as he is currently the league’s topscorer with eleven goals and one assist in his seven league appearances.

Monaco Team News

Loic Badiashile and Pierre-Daniel Nguinda are both missing through injury, but Danijel Subasic and Kevin N’Doram are both back in training.

Montpellier Preview

Meanwhile, Montpellier have endured a mixed run of form throughout this early part of the new Ligue 1 season, registering two wins, three defeats and two draws in their seven league games. However, their recent Ligue 1 form has been impressive as after a 0-1 win on the road at Troyes a fortnight ago, they managed to hold Paris Saint Germain to a goalless home draw last time out in Ligue 1. This leaves Montpellier only in 13th spot in the standings tied on eight points with Angers and Troyes, just three points clear of the bottom three. Scoring goals has been Montpellier’s main issue throughout this early part of the campaign as they have only found the back of the net in four occasions in seven league games. Rony Lopes has been Montpellier’s standout player in this early part of the season, helping the team with one goal and one assist in his seven league appearances. The bad news is that Montpellier have endured a terrible run of form on the road over the seven months, losing seven of their last nine away games in Ligue 1. However, they did well to secure a narrow 0-1 win at Troyes in their most recent league trip.

Montpellier Team News

Giovanni Sio is missing through suspension ahead of this clash.
