Monaco vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Monaco welcome Manchester City to the Stade Louis II after an exceptional first leg meeting in their round of 16 Champions League tie. Monaco were 2-1 winners in Ligue 1 at the weekend, beating Bordeaux to consolidate their place at the top of the league. Man City too enjoyed a victory on Saturday, comfortably seeing their way past Middlesbrough 2-0 in the FA Cup. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester City should have just too much quality for Monaco here and I’m expecting them to qualify. However, this should be an extremely exciting contest with plenty of goals once again and I can see it ending in a draw.

Monaco Preview

Monaco’s second-half showing against Bordeaux saw Leonardo Jardim’s side maintain their place at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring after sixty-eight minutes before Joao Moutinho doubled their lead with just fifteen minutes remaining. Diego Rolan pulled one back for Bordeaux with five minutes to go but it couldn’t bring with it a significant resurgence as the league leaders maintained their Ligue 1 title aspirations. They may have left themselves with somewhat of a mountain to climb heading into this second leg, although the three away goals they scored may prove crucial. They proved at the Etihad that they can seriously unsettle this Manchester City defence, exemplified by excellent finishes from Mbappe and Radamel Falcao. Monaco will also be boosted by the knowledge of their excellent record against English clubs in the Champions League. They beat Spurs home and away in this season’s group stages, knocked Arsenal out at the round of 16 in 2016 and defeated Chelsea in the 2004 semi-final. With just one home loss in twelve games in the Champions League since 2014, this is set to be a real tough task for Manchester City to get over this hurdle.

Man City Preview

Manchester City put in a solid performance away to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup at the weekend, as Pep Guardiola’s side booked their pace at Wembley for the semi-finals in April. David Silva opened the scoring for City in the third minute after good fork from Raheem Sterling. Sergio Aguero then doubled the lead with just over twenty minutes to put the game to bed by striking in the second half, with this now set to be Guardiola’s first return to Wembley Stadium as a manager since the 2011 Champions League final. It was the perfect response to their frustrating 0-0 draw with Stoke City midweek and sets them up nicely before going to Monaco on Wednesday evening. For as much as City produced a masterclass in attacking football, on an equal note they were sub-par defensively and left themselves wide open to the threat of forwards Mbappe and Falcao by playing such a high line. Getting a vital away goal - and doing so early - will be one of the main priorities for Guardiola in the first half of this game having almost admitted they don’t have enough defensively to go into the match with a pragmatic approach. If this contest is half as entertaining as the first, the neutral will be in for a real treat here.

Monaco Team News

Kamil Glik is missing for Monaco through suspension after picking up a yellow card in the first leg. Gabriel Boschilia (cruciate ligament) and Marcelo Carrillo (groin) are long-term absentees while Tiemoue Bakayoko (knee) and Radamel Falcao (hip) should be fit.

Man City Team News

Ilkay Gundogan (cruciate ligament) and Gabriel Jesus (broken foot) are both set to miss the rest of the season. Vincent Kompany (leg) is a doubt so John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi should start in defence.
