Monaco vs Borussia Dortmund Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Monaco welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Stade Louis II on 19/04/17 as two of Europe’s most exciting teams meet in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with the former leading 3-2. Monaco kept their three-point advantage at the top of Ligue 1 last time out, beating Dijon 2-1 at home. Dortmund meanwhile solidified their claim for a Champions League place with a 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Dortmund face a real uphill challenge here, with Monaco boasting a fantastic home record in this competition and throughout the season. This should be another open affair and one which I feel Monaco will come out on top of.

Monaco Preview

Monaco dismissed fears they may be about to wilt under the pressure of a title challenge when they came from behind to beat Dijon 2-1 last time out. Cedric Varrault opened the scoring for Dijon shortly before half-time to stun the Ligue 1 leaders, with the 19th-placed side currently fighting for their lives from relegation. However, positive substitutions in the second half helped turn the game around for Leonardo Jardim’s men, as Nabil Dirar dragged them level with just over twenty minutes remaining. Then, one of those mentioned substitutes Radamel Falcao won the game for Monaco, scoring his 24th goal of the season in all competitions by netting the winner with just ten minutes remaining. As such, they remain on course for their first Ligue 1 crown since 2000, which would also be the 8th league title of the club’s history. Also runners-up in the Champions League in 2004, Monaco are in the driving seat of this tie to reach the semi-finals after storming into a 3-2 lead in testing circumstances for Dortmund. Monaco have a fantastic record in this competition at home in recent years, winning seven and drawing two of their last nine at Stade Louis II and have lost just once at home in their last fourteen Champions League games since August 2005.

Dortmund Preview

Borussia Dortmund bounced back from a disappointing result in the first leg of their quarter-final with a 3-1 victory in the Bundesliga over Eintracht Frankfurt. Thomas Tuchel’s men played with intent from the start and took just three minutes to break the deadlock, Marco Reus finding the back of the net after being set up by Christian Pulisic. Although Marco Fabian pulled Frankfurt level, defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos ensured Dortmund went in at half-time 2-1 up. They then were forced to wait until five minutes from time to confirm the victory, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rounding off a good afternoon’s work for Dortmund. Their defeat to Monaco in the first leg was their first home defeat of the season in twenty-two matches in all competitions, although must be taken into context following an attack on their team bus the day prior, with the game being arranged for the following day as a result. Many Dortmund-associated voices have condemned the lack of a break in the rearranging of the fixture and it’s tough to deny the mental impact it will have had on their players. They are without a win in their last two Champions League away games, drawing at Real Madrid and losing at Benfica, although they did win their first two away games of the group stages.
