Minnesota United vs Chicago Fire Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Minnesota United picked up their first league win of 2018 after beating Orlando City 2-1 last weekend. Ethan Finlay beat the offside trap to score the opener in the 12th minute. However, Orlando were 11 just before half-time when Victor Yotun converted from the spot. Finlay, though, provided Minnesota with a crucial lead with 11 minutes left. Chicago Fire were involved in an opening day thriller against Sporting Kansas City, as the game finished as a 4-3 win for the latter. Felipe Gutierrez and Johnny Russell provided Kansas City with a 2-0 first-half lead. However, Chicago appeared to have produced a remarkable comeback with a goal from Aleksandar Katai and a brace from Nemanja Nikolic. However, Kansas hit back with a brace of their own – two goals from Jimmy Medranda and Gutierrez.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Minnesota were able to shock Chicago Fire last season with a win at Toyota Stadium. Heath may have seen his team score two goals in each of the first two matches, but Minnesota’s scoring form on the road should not come as a major surprise. Last season, though, Minnesota had scored among the fewest goals at home. Chicago Fire showed in the opening game that their attack has lost none of its potency. A great option in the game would be to back over 2.5 goals, which is available at a fairly attractive price.

Nemanja Nikolic is up and running for the campaign after coming up with a brace in the opening match. The striker finished 2017 as the top scorer with 24 goals – two more than David Villa. It appears that the Hungarian is keen on the golden boot title once again. I would back Nikolic to score anytime.

Total goals over 2.5 – 4/7

Nemanja Nikolic to score anytime – 10/11

Minnesota United Preview

Minnesota were quite pleased to get the win over Orlando City, as it gives a lot of confidence to tackle the upcoming away matches for the club. Manager Adrian Heath saw his team lose 12 out of the 17 away matches last season. However, the 2018 campaign has been quite different with Minnesota picking up their first away win in just two attempts. In the next five matches, Minnesota are only up against teams that made it to the play-offs last season.

Minnesota United Team News

Sam Cronin (head), Kevin Molino (cruciate ligament), Sam Nicholson (hamstring), Abu Danladi (hamstring), and José Leiton (personal reasons) are unavailable for Minnesota.

Chicago Fire Preview

The disastrous start to the season for Chicago Fire is not a good sign, as the team simply do not desire a continuation to the 2017 end-of-season form. After having been a dominant force for much of 2017, Chicago even failed to reach the conference finals. Last season’s top scorer, Nemanja Nikolic does appear to have kept his focus in the game. His goals will once again be crucial in Chicago’s push to win the first MLS Cup title since 1998. After conceding four goals in the opening game, manager Veljko Paunovic may very well opt to keep things tight at the back in the upcoming match.

Chicago Fire Team News

Daniel Johnson (ankle), Rafael Ramos (thigh), Grant Lillard (knee), Michael de Leeuw (cruciate ligament), Jonathan Campbell (cheekbone), and Djordje Mihailovic (cruciate ligament) miss out due to injuries.
