Millwall vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Boxing Day (15:00) fixture is an important one at the bottom end of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Millwall suffered a second successive loss and stretched their winless run to eight with a 1-0 road loss at Stoke. The result was perhaps a little harsh on them as they were the better side on the expected goals data.

Reading are now without a victory in seven having gone down to a 1-0 home loss to Middlesbrough last time out. The Teesiders were deserved winners according to the expected goals data.

The previous meeting between these sides came back in October at the Madejski and the Royals won that 3-1. Yakou Meite was the man for that occasion netting a brace while Sam Baldock netted a penalty and Murray Wallace scored for the Lions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Millwall are far too short to be backed here given they have won just one of their last eight fixtures. Reading are without a win in seven but won 3-1 when these sides met in October and with a new man in the dugout look worth taking alongside the draw in the double chance market.

The Lions have blanked in two of their last five and the Royals have restricted both Leeds and Middlesbrough to one goal recently and they look worth a small interest to keep a clean sheet here.

Millwall Preview

The Lions ended last season so well that some fans would have had hopes of making the play-offs this time around. As it is they seem set for a relegation battle as they sit in 22nd through the expected goals data has them as high as 15th.

At the Den, the London outfit have taken 15 of their 19 points this season with four victories, four draws and just three defeats in 11. They are without a win in their last three at home through two of these have finished all-square.

Millwall are struggling at the back with 39 goals shipped which gives the second worst defensive record in the league. They have netted 28 times which is a decent record with Lee Gregory leading the way with seven goals.

Millwall Team News

Shaun Williams (ankle) is out for a few weeks while Tom Bradshaw (knee) will miss the rest of the season.

Reading Preview

The Royals confirmed Jose Gomez as their new manager who comes into the club from Rio Ave in Portugal. The 48-year-old takes over the team in 21st place just outside the relegation zone on goal-difference with the expected goals data feeling that they should be bottom.

Away from the Madejski, it has been tough with just one victory through five draws means they have also just five times. They are without a win in their last seven on their travels through two of these three have ended all-square.

Reading have the seventh lowest attack netting just 27 times and are led by Jon Dadhi Bodvarsson with seven goals. At the back they have shipped 36 goals which gives them the six worst defence in the Championship.

Reading Team News

Liam Moore (calf)), Paul McShane (knee),  Omar Richards (hamstring), Adrian Popa (ankle), Jordan Obita (cruciate) and Saeid Ezzatolahi (thigh) all long-term absentees.
