Millwall vs Leicester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Millwall welcome Leicester City to The Den on 18/02/17 as the League One side look to cause yet another FA Cup shock against Premier League opposition. Millwall will be full of confidence having beaten Port Vale 2-0 last time out. Leicester, on the other hand, hit a new low on Sunday as they fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Swansea to continue their slump. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Millwall Preview

Millwall’s excellent late run of form continued midweek as they defeated Port Vale to move into the playoff places in League One. Striker Aidan O’Brien - who started in the absence of star forward Lee Gregory - opened the scoring for the Lions in the first half after excellent work from winger Fred Onyedinma. Defender Jake Cooper added a second early in the second period as Millwall made it five consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. Neil Harris has created a tough, hard-working outfit this season, with the squad really buying into the style of play he asks for. They are unbeaten in their previous twelve matches in all competitions, going unbeaten since a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Scunthorpe on December 17. The Lions have beaten both Bournemouth and Watford at home to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup, doing so without conceding against either side. Given that Leicester are lower in the Premier League table than both of the respective top-flight sides they have eliminated to date in the competition, Millwall will feel they have a fantastic opportunity to claim a third significant scalp and progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Leicester Preview

Leicester were particularly poor at Swansea on Sunday, losing 2-0 away to Paul Clement’s reinvigorated men as they lost their fifth Premier League game in a row - it also being their sixth league fixture without finding the back of the net. Swansea were the proactive side in the contest and took a deserved lead ten minutes before the break as Alfie Mawson gave them the lead with a stunning volley. Some neat one-touch passing that featured Tom Carroll, Fernando Llorente and Gylfi Sigurdsson saw Martin Olsson played in down Leicester’s right flank and the full-back beat Kasper Schmeichel at his near post, leaving questions to be asked about the Dane’s role in the goal. It’s one thing when quality is lacking, but when effort is called into question there really is an internal issue and this Leicester side look as if they are lacking any kind of heart. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy combined to score forty-one league goals last season, but have managed just eight between them this and their drop off in form is symbiotic of Leicester’s ascent this term. If the Foxes don’t travel to The Den up for the fight they will be picked off quicker than their rise and fall - just ask Watford who went out of the competition to Millwall in the fourth round.

Millwall Team News

Shaun Williams is set to be available after featuring against Port Vale midweek. However, Ben Thompson, Lee Gregory and Shaun Hutchinson are all doubts for the Lions through injury.

Leicester Team News

Leonardo Ulloa (thigh) is a doubt for the away side. Aside from the Argentinian forward, they have no fresh injury concerns, with Claudio Ranieri set to make a number of changes to the side which lost at Swansea last time out.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Millwall have proved to be a really resilient side this season and were excellent when Watford visited The Den in the previous round of the FA Cup. With Leicester appearing to lack heart and character at this moment in time, I’m expecting the home side to get a result once again from this one.
