Middlesbrough vs West Ham United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough take on West Ham United at the Riverside Stadium on 21/01/17 in a meeting of two sides currently sat in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Middlesbrough earned a solid point away from home last weekend, drawing 0-0 at Watford to keep the gap between themselves and the relegation zone at four points. West Ham, on the other hand, put current off-field distractions behind them to beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at the London Stadium. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough played out the most tedious fixture of last weekend’s round of Premier League games during their goalless draw at Watford last time out. In a game neither could afford to lose, it became a rather predictable result all things considered, as both played tentatively with chances not easy to come by. It leaves Boro sat 16th in the Premier League table, four points above 18th-placed Hull City, although they will want to increase that gap here to ensure the end of the season can go as smoothly as possible. Boro are without a win in their last four Premier League outings, drawing two and losing two, and have managed just one goal during that time, with the team really struggling to find the back of the net. They have already brought in Rudy Gestede in an attempt to fix that issue, and they could hand a second debut to Patrick Bamford in this one, who is set to join the club for £10m this week. Boro have been decent at the Riverside this term against teams around them in the league, winning three and drawing one of their last six, with the two defeats in that time coming against Chelsea and Liverpool. During those games where they have avoided defeat, Aitor Karanka’s side have kept four clean sheets and will feel confident of another shutout this time around.

West Ham Preview

West Ham put to bet a three-game winless streak - during which they failed to hit the back of the net - when they swept aside Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace at the London Stadium last time out. The clean sheet that came with the 3-0 win was also the first time in four matches that they were able to keep the opposition out, with winger Sofiane Feghouli opening the scoring. Andy Carroll’s stunning overhead kick then doubled their advantage, before Manuel Lanzini’s excellent finish on the break made it three to the Hammers and lifted a huge weight of pressure from the shoulders of Slaven Bilic. Given the situation of Dimitri Payet at this moment in time, it would’ve been easy for the players to fold under the disappointment of having their star man declare his intent to leave, but it in turn created a strong sense of unity and defiance amongst the squad. With four wins and two draws from their last six Premier League games, West Ham come into this game off of a decent enough run of form, although they will be hoping to improve their recent away record. With just one win from their last six, Bilic’s men haven’t travelled well of late and improving that, as well as maintaining consistency at home, will see them climb up the Premier League table.

Middlesbrough Team News

Daniel Ayala is suspended for this one and misses out. Antonio Barragan (hamstring) is a doubt, while Gaston Ramirez (knee) remains touch-and-go. Patrick Bamford could make his second Boro debut.

West Ham Team News

Cheikhou Kouyate and Andre Ayew are both unavailable due to their involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations. Diafra Sakho (hamstring) is ruled out, while Arthur Masuaku (knee) and Alvaro Arbeloa (calf) are still out.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This seems like it could be a really interesting clash between two teams who appear to be set for a bottom-half finish this term. Middlesbrough simply don’t score enough goals to be considered safe at this point, and West Ham are too inconsistent and unsettled in their results. I’m expecting this to be a draw.
