Middlesbrough vs Swansea City Match Prediction

By Sam Turbitt

The Riverside Stadium hosts home team Middlesbrough and relegation threatened Swansea City in a must-win Premier League game for both teams. The game takes place at 15:00 on Saturday the 17th of December. In this betting preview, you will find full team news, our betting predictions and tips as well as key match stats. Middlesbrough were soundly beaten at the Riverside on Wednesday as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners. Swansea also suffered defeat away to West Bromwich Albion. Wayne Routledge grabbed a consolation goal in the 78th minute. As it stands Swansea City are in 18th place, 3 points below their opponents who are 17th in the Premier League standings.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough have found it hard to consistently score since their promotion to the Premier League. This was expected by many who watched Boro last year, whose success was largely down to their defensive qualities. Alvaro Negredo and Christian Stuani are Middlesbrough’s leading scorers with 3 goals a piece, but Karanka will be hoping they can both hit double figures for the season. If Middlesbrough can add goals to their displays they will give themselves a great chance of staying in the league. No team has scored less than the Tyneside club in the league, only finding the net 13 times in 16 games. Much like their Championship campaign last year they have been fairly solid in defence. Only 5 sides have conceded less than Boro in the Premier League this year, so a fairly safe bet most of the season has been backing unders.

Swansea Preview

The Swans suffered another defeat midweek, but have slightly improved in recent weeks with 6 points from their last 4 games. Bob Bradley is already up against it with his side still sitting in the relegation places after 16 games. A win here still wouldn’t be enough to get his side out of the dropzone due to their considerably poor goal difference. Scoring goals hasn’t been an issue for the Welsh outfit but they are shipping far too many goals of their own, 34 in total after just 16 games. On Wednesday it took all of 20 minutes for Swansea to capitulate and allow Salomon Rondon to score a headed hat-trick. This will have brought no end of frustration to the supporters, who could only watch on. The January transfer window is massive for this club, who have not spent on players over the last 5 seasons. A win here could kickstart a survival push with their next 4 games, that will all be considered as winnable. Swansea’s next 4 games are Middlesbrough (a), West Ham (h), Bournemouth (h) and Crystal Palace (a). If they can pick up 3 wins in them games their survival hopes will take a massive boost.

Middlesbrough Team News

Daniel Ayala (ankle), George Friend (knee injury) and Gaston Ramirez (foot injury) are all doubts for the weekends game, and James Husband is out until early January.

Swansea Team News

Swansea look set to be without Sung-Yeung Ki and Federico Fernandez, who have both broken a toe. Sung-Yeung Ki has recently returned to training so could be back in action shortly.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Two teams with polar opposite stats at both ends of the pitch should make for an interesting encounter. One team scores and can’t defend, one team can’t score but defend very well. This will be considered a six-pointer for both managers as they look to gain the edge in the bid for safety. Largely due to this being at the Riverside I am edging towards Middlesbrough. Swansea have taken just 1 point from their last 7 away games in the Premier League. This could also be the perfect opportunity for Boro to find some form in front of goal.
