Middlesbrough vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough welcome Sunderland to the Riverside Stadium in 26/04/17 in a meeting of the Premier League’s bottom two clubs. Middlesbrough were hammered 4-0 at the weekend at the hands of Bournemouth to move them a step closer to relegation. Sunderland meanwhile had the weekend off, last featuring in a 2-2 draw at home to West Ham. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

These two sides have a combined one victory to show for their last fifteen respective Premier League games, with both fully deserving of being in the bottom two at this stage of the season. With neither side in a winning rhythm, I’m expecting this to be a draw.

Draw - 9/4

Jermain Defoe to score anytime - 6/5

Both teams to score YES - 4/5

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough fell to nine points adrift of safety on Saturday after suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Bournemouth. Steve Agnew’s men were two goals and a man down inside twenty minutes, with both Josh King and Benik Afobe finding the back of the net before Gaston Ramirez saw red for two stupid yellow cards. Marc Pugh and Charlie Daniels both added strikes in the second half, as a Boro side, who set up with a defensive 5-4-1 at the start of the day, left their supporters with an even longer journey home. Winger Stewart Downing apologised to the club’s fans for the nature of the defeat and it summed up what’s been a sorry season for Middlesbrough, who are still waiting to end their winless run. It currently stands at sixteen games without a win in the Premier League for the north east outfit, who last picked up three points in a 3-0 win over Bob Bradley’s Swansea City on December 17. Their only away win this season, though, came at Sunderland on the second day of the season, a result they will look to take confidence from coming into this upcoming contest. Boro fans have seen their team pick up just four points from a possible twenty-one at home this calendar year and they need to secure a win here if they are to have any chance whatsoever of escaping relegation.

Sunderland Preview

Sunderland will be hoping they can build on a late comeback against West Ham the weekend before last after they drew 2-2 at the Stadium of Light. They fell behind just five minutes into the game through Hammers’ forward Andre Ayew but found themselves level in extraordinary fashion as Wahbi Khazri scored directly from a corner, much to the embarrassment of Darren Randolph. James Collins rose highest to head West Ham into an early second-half lead, but another blunder from Randolph - who came flying out of his goal and failed to get the required distance on his punch - allowed Fabio Borini to finish from the edge of the box. It showed a touch of fight from a Sunderland who have appeared to lack apathy for much of the campaign, especially in recent weeks, and ultimately won’t prove to be enough for them this season. David Moyes’ team currently sit twelve points adrift of safety, albeit with two games in hand but, should they lose those two games in hand, would be just one more defeat away from having their fate sealed once and for all. With just one win in their last fifteen, it’s almost impossible to see a scenario where Sunderland can win enough games to somehow keep themselves in the Premier League for next season.

Middlesbrough Team News

Gaston Ramirez is suspended following his red card at the weekend. Victor Valdes (rib) missed the trip to Bournemouth and is doubtful so Brad Guzan should remain in goal. Grant Leadbitter (hamstring) is sidelined.

Sunderland Team News

Sebastian Larsson is suspended while Bryan Oviedo (hamstring), Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore (both cruciate ligament) are all out for the rest of the season. Jan Kirchhoff (knee) is a doubt, but Billy Jones could return.
