Middlesbrough vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough host Southampton at the Riverside Stadium on 13/05/17 as the hosts play their final home game in the Premier League for at least another season. Boro’s fate was sealed on Monday night after they lost 3-0 away to Chelsea. Southampton meanwhile were beaten by Arsenal midweek, going down 2-0 to the top-four chasing side. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Middlesbrough will be looking to go out on a high here, in a game which has little riding on it for either side. Southampton have performed well away from home in recent weeks but appeared on Wednesday night to now be on the beach, so I’m expecting Middlesbrough to sign off with a positive performance.

Middlesbrough Preview

Monday night’s performance at Stamford Bridge was rather indicative of their season so far, lacking aggression and an attacking threat during their 3-0 loss away to Chelsea. Diego Costa gave Chelsea the lead with a neat finish from Cesc Fabregas’ pass, before Marcos Alonso’s low drive went underneath the legs of Brad Guzan at his near post to double Chelsea’s lead heading into half-time. Fabregas then produced another excellent moment in the final third, flicking the ball into the path of Nemanja Matic, who chested the ball down before calmly finishing, as Boro went down with a whimper. With just pride left to play for, the Boro players will be hoping to end on somewhat of a high at the Riverside Stadium, winning just one of their last nine games at home and have won just four home games all season. This is also a big two weekends for caretaker boss Steve Agnew, as he looks to stake his claim for being awarded the manager’s job on a full-time basis heading into the Championship. In reflection, Middlesbrough will likely regret not giving it more of a go in the Premier League this season, currently sitting as the lowest-scoring side in the division with 26 goals, although do have the best defensive record of all the teams currently in the bottom half of the table.

Southampton Preview

Southampton’s poor home record was further compounded on Wednesday evening, as they lost 2-0 to a determined Arsenal side who turned on the style in the second half. Mesut Ozil’s cushioned pass found Alexis Sanchez, who then sold Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida with a superb dummy, creating the space for himself to slot past Fraser Forster to give Arsenal the lead. Sanchez was then involved in Arsenal’s second, crossing for Aaron Ramsey at the far post and the Welshman produced a looping header to the far post which Olivier Giroud made no mistake in converting with his head. It’s now five games without a win for Southampton in the Premier League, from which they have failed to score in four of those games. They have also been involved in two 0-0 draws during that run and the lack of entertaining football isn’t helping Claude Puel’s case to stay on as Saints manager next season. Southampton have performed far better away from home this season, currently boasting the 8th best away record in the league, compared to the fourth-worst home record. They’ve won three of their last six away from home, with the three matches they’ve failed to win coming against the current top-three sides in the league.

Alex McCarthy (hamstring) and Virgil van Dijk (ankle) are both set to miss the rest of the season through injury. Manolo Gabbiadini will hope to get on the scoresheet after failing to do so since returning from injury.
