Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Sheffield Wednesday look to extend their unbeaten streak when they travel to the Riverside Stadium to take on Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Middlesbrough only managed to hold Leicester to a goalless home draw last time out in the Premier League. Sheffield Wednesday also secured a nil-nil draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out in the Championship. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough’s poor run of form in the Premier League continued on Monday as they only managed a goalless home draw against Leicester, despite the Foxes’ awful away record. Boro find themselves in 16th place in the standings with 19 points to their name after 20 rounds, four points clear of the relegation zone. This means that staying in the Premier League is the main goal of manager Aitor Karanka. Middlesbrough’s biggest problem throughout this Premier League campaign has been their inefficient attack, as they hold the joint worst offensive record in the division with just 17 goals scored in 20 rounds. Alvaro Negredo has been Boro’s most influential player on the pitch throughout this Premier League campaign, helping the team with 5 goals and 4 assists in his 19 league appearances. Their home form has also been a problem, as Middlesbrough have only won three of their last 13 games in all competitions at the Riverside Stadium. The good news is that Boro have only lost once in their seven home meetings with Sheffield Wednesday, while winning five in the process. Regarding their FA Cup recent history, Middlesbrough have been eliminated at this stage of the competition last year following a 1-2 home defeat against Burnley.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

On the contrary, Sheffield Wednesday have only lost once in their last nine games in the Championship, and come into this clash off the back of a five-game unbeaten streak. The Owls looked very solid at the back over the past month, keeping a clean sheet in four of their last five league fixtures. Sheffield Wednesday currently stand in 6th position in the league table with 42 points to their name after 25 league games, just four points off the 3rd-placed Reading. Sheffield have had problems to find the back of the net so far this season, but the good news is they have one of the best defensive records in the division with just 24 goals conceded in 25 rounds. Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri have been Sheffield’s most prolific players in front of goal so far this season, as the pair have bagged 12 goals and 5 assists between them. The Owls’ recent away form isn’t all great, as they have only won two of their last seven away games in the Championship. Furthermore, Sheffield Wednesday have only won once in their seven visits to the Riverside Stadium, scoring just five goals in this term. Their away record in the FA Cup has also been a problem, winning just once in their last six away fixtures.

Middlesbrough Team News

Antonio Barragan and James Husband are both doubts, but Viktor Fischer is out with a knee injury.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Marco Matias is out with a groin injury, while William Buckley, Urby Emanuelson, Filipe Melo and Gary Hooper are all doubts.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although they haven’t been their best on home soil this season, Middlesbrough still hold a superior head-to-head home record over Sheffield Wednesday. Boro have won five of their seven home meetings with Sheffield Wednesday in all competitions. I’m backing Middlesbrough to win here, but I’m also expecting Sheffield Wednesday to get on the scoresheet, as they managed to score in nine of their last ten away games in the Championship.
