Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Boxing Day (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Middlesbrough a four-game winless run behind them in the league as they saw off Reading 1-0 at the Madejski. George Friend got the only goal to give the Teesiders a deserved and needed three points.

Sheffield Wednesday sacked manager Jos Luhukay on Friday and got a reward with a 1-0 home success over Preston. Michael Hector got the goal as they saw off a North-End side who played with ten minute for 64 minutes.

The reverse fixture came in mid-October at Hillsborough and saw Boro win 2-1 with a goal each from Mo Besic and Britt Assombalonga while Adam Reach scored for the Owls. It continues a head-to-head trend which has seen the Teesiders unbeaten in the last six.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the respect home form of Middlesbrough and the road results of Sheffield Wednesday a home victory looks most likely.  That being said I would not be taking the Teesiders at such short odds given the lack of goals in the side and instead would look at the other markets to find the value.

Around 55% of goals the hosts have scored have come after the break while it is around 70% for the visitors.  This means backing the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring looks a logical play. Backing the Owls to also score after the break is also a bet that offers some appeal.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro have made a good start to the season sitting in fourth place which is one place above where the expected goals data has them. The worry is that they sit eight points behind Norwich in the second automatic promotion spot.

At the Riverside, they have been tough to beat winning five, drawing four and losing just the two. Only Leeds (six) have conceded a lower number of goals at home than the seven they have shipped.

Middlesbrough have the best defensive record in the Championship with just 16 conceded with their next closest shipping 20. Their attack needs work as they are the fifth lowest scorers with just 25 goals.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (hamstring) and Ryan Shotton (unknown) are doubt while  Sam McQueen (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have had a disappointing first half of the season sitting in 17th place closer to the bottom three than the top three. Steve Bruce is rumoured to be the man in the frame and it will be interesting to see how the former Sheffield United boss is accepted by the fans.

Away from Hillsborough, they have struggled losing seven of 11 and winning on just three occasions. Only Millwall with 23 have conceded more road goals than the 22 Wednesday have shipped.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Fernando Forestieri (foot) is a doubt while Sam Winnall (hamstring), Kieran Lee (knee) and Gary Hooper (groin) are long-term absentees. Barry Bannan will through be available after a suspension.
