Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday live early evening game (17:30) should be a fun battle between two sides expected to go well this season. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. It did not click on opening day for Middlesbrough as they went down 1-0 at Molineux to Wolves. A Dani Ayala mistake let Leo Bonatini in for the goal and that was the ending of the scoring. Sheffield United had a good return to the Championship though as a packed Bramall Lane saw them see off Brentford 1-0. Billy Sharp was naturally the goalscorer that day as he continued where he left off in League One. It has been a while since these two have met but it is the North-Eastern side who have had the advantage in recent meetings losing just one of their last seven battles.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is one of those games where you could make a case that both sides are value. Middlesbrough at home might not go off so big in a few months time though while they are gelling us a unit United look one of those side ready to cause problems, it is a tough puzzle and I shall swerve it for other markets. I like a few anytime scorer bets the first of which is Billy Sharp who should not be going off at such a price. He has a high-quality scorer and one who I don’t think will struggle to make the step up in quality. Another I like the look of is Jonny Howson who did well in home games for Norwich and might find the space between the defence and midfield here to start his account for Boro.

Middlesbrough Preview

At home, Boro struggled last season winning just four times and they must make the Riverside a much tougher place to visit this season. It is obvious that lack of goals was an issue for them last season with just 27 for the season and 17 of these in front of their own fans. The North-Eastern side saw a little bit more of the ball than Wolves but despite a new line-up familiar failings of an inability to create was their main issue. It is interesting to note that Cyrus Christie saw a lot more of the ball and a lot will be asked of the full-back if Boro persist with the three midfielders who lack any natural width. As they were in the Premier League last season it means that Middlesbrough have not had a game this midweek in the League Cup.

Sheffield United Preview

On the road, the Blades had the best record in League One last season with 13 victories, seven draws and just three defeats from their 23 fixtures. A feature of these games was their abiity to score goals as they netted a remarkable 50 which is over two per game and was 16 more than their nearest rivals. United rolled out a 3-5-2 in their opening encounter with Samir Carruthers the furthest forward positioned of the middle three though it was John Fleck who registered the most shots (outside of Billy Sharp). The Blades saw less of the ball and created a lower number of scoring chances last time out so perhaps were a little lucky to come away with all three points. In the League Cup, United defeated Wallsall 3-2 in a see-saw game to book their place in the next round. Nathan Thomas and Danny Lafferty netted one each while they also were grateful for a Kory Roberts goal.

Sheffield United Team News

George Baldock is back in training after ligament issues while Simon Moore will miss a few weeks with knee issues.
