Middlesbrough vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Middlesbrough will be looking to bounce back after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Norwich in their last game. Boro were always up against it following a 28th minute dismissal of front man Rudy Gestede. Reading suffered a home loss in their last match going down 2-0 at home to Millwall at the Madjeski Stadium. The Lions were much the better team and deserved their two late goals that enabled them to take all three points. The reverse fixture came at the end of October in a game that the Teesiders emerged victorious in. A Grant Leadbitter penalty and a Britt Assombalonga strike ensured a 2-0 victory.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given they have taken just one point from their last three at home Middlesbrough are not a side I would want to be backing at short odds though by the same margin Reading offer no appeal so I would avoid taking a side in the win-draw-win market. The last five Boro home games have been goalless at half-time and given both sides score over 60% of their goals in the second 45 minutes this looks worth a small interest as does backing the second-half to be the highest scoring.

Middlesbrough Preview

It has been a mixed bag of late for the Teesiders with three victories, one draw and three defeats from their last seven in the league. They are in ninth place, six points outside the play-offs with just two of their next eight against teams in the top ten. At the Riverside Stadium, they have taken just one point from their last three and failed to find the back of the net in any of these. Not one of their last nine in the league in front of their own fans has seen both teams find the back of the net. Just two of the last seven Middlesbrough have played in the Championship have gone over 2.5 goals. Around 60% of their goals this season have come in the second-half with 52% in the final 30 minutes.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede has appealed his red card successfully and is able to play.

Reading Preview

The Royals are on a poor run of form that has seen them take just six points from their last nine fixtures. They sit in 18th place just six points above relegation and each of their next five come against teams above them in the table. Away from the Madejski Stadium, they are unbeaten in three though these games all came against teams in the bottom six. Just one of their last five on the road has gone over 2.5 goals. Reading have failed to find the back of the net in four of their last five and five of their last seven league games. Just 27% of the goals they have netted in the league this campaign have come in the first-half.

Reading Team News

Callum Harriott, John Swift and Paul McShane (all hamstring), Joe Mendez, Stephen Quinn (both knee) and Tommy Elphick (calf) are doubts. Jordan Obita is out for the remainder of the season with a cruciate ligament problem
