Middlesbrough vs Manchester United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough host Manchester United at the Riverside Stadium on 19/03/17 in a crucial game for both teams at opposite ends of the table. Middlesbrough lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City in their last game in what proved to be Aitor Karanka’s final game in charge. Manchester United meanwhile scraped past Rostov in the Europa League, winning 1-0 to progress 2-1 on aggregate. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester United’s players did, as Jose Mourinho was so keen to point out, show signs of fatigue and tiredness on Thursday evening and have a quick turnaround here, as well as key players missing. A change of manager so often sparks a positive reaction and, with these factors in mind, I’m anticipating a draw.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough were eliminated from the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage last time out, going down 2-0 to Manchester City at home. City were in control from the outset, taking the lead in the third minute through David Silva. From there, Boro failed to truly recover and the game was taken from their reach in the second half when Sergio Aguero netted in the 67th minute. Aitor Karanka’s four-year spell at Middlesbrough came to an end during the week after reports of yet another training ground bust-up, this time with Stewart Downing, reflecting of what has ultimately been a far from smooth course in the previous twelve months or so for the Spaniard. Steve Agnew will take temporary charge of the side this weekend and he leads a side currently 19th in the Premier League table, three points adrift of Crystal Palace in 17th. Still without a Premier League win in 2017, they are dropping at an alarming rate and it seemed almost inevitable that a change would happen at some stage of the season. Winning once in their last thirteen, their well documented goalscoring issues have been the cause of their problems and they will be looking to take full advantage of a fatigued Manchester United team here.

Man United Preview

Manchester United won their first match since lifting the EFL Cup on Thursday evening, albeit in unconvincing fashion, as they beat Rostov of Russia 1-0 in the Europa League Round of 16. Juan Mata scored the only goal of the game, producing a clinical finish at the far post from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s cut back. Playing a new 3-5-2 formation, United’s front three of Mata, Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan looked on the same wavelength in a formation that has proved so successful for Chelsea this season. Jose Mourinho has again made the headlines for his outspoken views on United’s congested fixture list, conceding that his side would “probably lose” this weekend as a result of burnout. United will be looking to continue their recent impressive away form, winning five and drawing two of their last seven on the road. Incredibly, their unbeaten run in the Premier League still stands at seventeen games, last losing back in October in league action, although they remain unmoved from the position of 6th. It will be intriguing to see whether Mourinho’s fatigue bluff is called, or whether it is, as is so often the case, a distraction to divert the attention from his side’s recent poor performances.

Middlesbrough Team News

Boro have a number of injury concerns, with striker Rudy Gestede (hamstring) unlikely to feature. Defensively, too, potential absentees come in the shape of Calum Chambers (foot), Daniel Ayala (hamstring), Bernardo (ankle) and George Friend (calf), all of whom have knocks.

Man United Team News

Key players in Ander Herrera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are both suspended for this one. Wayne Rooney (knee) is a out, as is Daley Blind (head) and Paul Pogba (hamstring) who picked up their injuries against Rostov on Thursday night. Anthony Martial is in contention to feature.
